Over the weekend, I purchased a 1898 Colt M1877 Lightning at a local gun show. The gun is in decent shape, not collectable condition, but looks like could be a shooter.

While a .38SPL fits in the chamber, I understand those rounds are too hot for the old gun. I've also read that the original round had a 'shouldered" bullet, that was .361 in diameter (at the exposed end, so I'm pretty sure there's nothing available like it today.

From what I've read so far, some folks are using standard .38spl cartridges, and the reloading them with a 145~150grain hollow based wadcutter to promote better expansion.

The only recipe I found so far is based on a 2.5~2.6 grain of Bullseye, but I'd like to use something closer to the original blackpowder, or better yet, Trail Boss. I have at least 3 bottles of that stuff and would like to use it.

Any ideas on a recipe using that? Or other ideas on bullets?

Thanks,
