I have a Dan Wesson (Monson Mass.) 15VH2 and I'm firing .38 specials out of them. Using 2.7 gr. 700x powder I load 148 gr. hollow based wadcutters out of it. My question is can my pistol, regular brass and lead based heads handle +P loads? If so how much of 700x is recommended?

I don't quite understand your post. Yes, your pistol can handle +P loads since it's a 357 Mag and No you can not use HBWC bullets for +P loads. They are for target use only and the rear skirts will come off and stick in your barrel just waiting for your next round to be fired and "KABOOM". I think you need to sit down and read your reloading manual and posssible a second one to help you learn the basics of what to do and not do in reloading.

If you want to shoot lead bullets at .38 Special +P pressures I would switch to a 158gr LSWC or a 125gr LRNFP bullet. Lyman lists 700-X for +P loads but only with lighter lead bullets. With a 120gr LRN bullet they list a 700-X +P charge of 4.2gr MAX.

W231 works well with lead bullets in a .38 Special +P load if that's any help. So does AA#5, HS-6, Unique and Universal.

Thank you guys, for the information. And loaded, I do know the basics for reloading, however what I also have is enough intelligence and humility to ask about something rather than jumping head first into it and losing a hand or worse.

If you load lead bullets, you really need to get a Lyman #49 reloading manual.

It completely covers +P lead bullet .38 Special for 90, 120, 150, 155, 158, 160, and 170 grain bullets.

Nothing for 700X past 150 grain though.
It is really too fast, and not suitable for +P heavy bullet loads.

And it really is all about the powder.
There are some powder choices that will give +P velocity at standard pressure.

Demitrios: I did not mean to insult your intelligence or capability and I apoligize if my intentions were wrong. I did say I did not quite what you were asking in your post and assumed you were asking if you could load LHBWC to +P velocities in your revolver, from that I felt you were a new shooter. Please reread your original post to realize what I picked up. Again I'm sorry if I stepped on your toes.

Demitrois: I apoligize if I insulted your intelligence or capabilities for my intention was to help and not hurt you. If you would reread your original post, it appears to me that you're asking if HBWC +P loads could be shot in your revolver and that led me to believe that you were a new shooter. My only intention was to keep you from hurting yourself or damaging your firearm. Again, I am sorry if I hurt your feelings since that was not my desire, I only wanted to help you.

it appears to me that you're asking if HBWC +P loads could be shot in your revolver
I got the exact same impression.

And I would have told you just about the same thing loadedround did, except he beat me too it.
