I put this in the rifle section because it is clearly a rifle cartridge. going through the test fire ammo the other day three cartridges marked 38 Remington were found. Yes 38 not 35. At the case mouth the bullet measured .370. Google/Yahoo searches produce no results and COW does not list it.

Anyone have info on this one?

.38-50 Remington Hepburn straight wall cartridge is listed in cartridges of the world.
Size and ballistics about the same as the .38/55 Winchester

It is possible they chambered some rifles, especially rolling blocks and Hepburn side lever rifles for custom made everlasting brass cartridge cases and may have made and marked the initial cartridges.

Most target shooters of days gone by would have lathe turned any additional cases themselves or had them made.

Gun Manufacturers were weird like that back then.
They made the things people wanted.

It wasn't a 38-55. It was a bottle necked case which at first we thought was a 35 Rem. I went to get them out of the odd ball ammo tub to take pics. The manager said she sold them to a cartridge collector already.

The driver came back by the shop today and had the cartridge with him. Pics as requested:

Yep, it sure as shooting says 38 Remington!
Is that a rebated rim I see?
And a .370 bullet?
I've no clue, but mysteries like this interest me.

Bullet measures 375. 35 rem measures 358. But, yes from a distance it does look like a 35 rem.

No it is not rebated. That is caused by the angle of the camera I think.

I just e-mail the pics to Remington. I'll post the reply if I get one.

Looks like one of the rimless cartridges designed for the Remington Model 8 self-loading rifle, but I've never seen a .38 version, only .25, .30, .32, and .35.

Not rebated. I see.
Wow, a .375" bullet. It gets mysteriouser and mysteriouser!
Wonder if it's ammo to a prototype version of the Model 8 that never made it into production?
Maybe Remington can shed some light on it. At any rate, I would think it might have some interest to a cartridge collector.

You might have the only three cartridges out there, if it was something experimental. It doesn't seem like any production rifle was ever made in that calibre, the closest I see is the .375 Winchester, a shortened version of the .38-55 made for the Model 94 Big Bore.

Very interesting! It does appear to be in the same family as the .25, .30, .32, and .35 Remingtons. Perhaps it is an experimental cartridge that never made it into production.

Thanks for posting the pics, jdh. It looks like it might have been an even better brush round than the 35 Rem, if it had been put into production.
It will be interesting if Remington gets back to you with information.

Circa 1913 Remington salesmen were advised the .38 Remington would be added to the line of cartridges chambered in the Model 8 Remington, using a 250 or 280 grain bullet. Never saw the light of day (probably kicked like a mule), although one Model 8 is known with ".38 REM" on the barrel extension.
Suspect those three cartridges might be worth a bit to a collector.
