38 S&W Special CTG year, worth?

I have a friend's 38 S. & W. Special CTG. with a serial number under the butt of C 343096. It has a 6" barrel, walnut handle stocks, and stamped on the side of the frame under the barrel (when you lay out the cylinder) is:

It also says made in USA, Smith and Wesson, Springfield, Mass.

Anyone know what year and an approximate value? It's in good condition, a few signs of use.

Welcome to the forum.

That serial number would suggest it's a Military and Police Model (M&P for short) from around 1956. In 1957 S&W assigned model numbers to all their guns and this one became the Model 10.

The M&P (M10) is built on the K frame size and is the most popular revolver ever built. Made in blue and nickel with 2,4,5 and 6" barrels being most common with others like 3" and 6.5" also seen. The same gun in stainless steel is the Model 64.

Value will depend on condition but generally speaking a nice 6" M&P will fetch $200-$300. Having the original box adds a lot of value as does having the original stocks on the gun. One side will have the serial stamped on the inside.

Those numbers you noted are factory assembly numbers and are meaningless to us.

If it's in great condition, 95% or better, I've seen them in the $450 range !!!!! Ugh!
