I know a new shooter who has an interest in obtaining a pistol for both fun and defensive use. I'm heavily biased in favor of semi-autos, but since the new shooter doesn't even care for the recoil of a 9mm (from a Glock 17), we tried a Ruger .357 revolver (I think it was an SP101... heavy beast) with .38 Special ammo.

Shooting that Ruger was a good experience for the newbie, but as a semi-auto junkie, I just can't see six rounds with a slower reload time as being optimal. Do any reputable vendors make an ultra-reliable double-action revolver in .38 Special with a capacity of more than 6 rounds? The revolver doesn't have to be capable of handling .357, either.

There are some 7 and 8 shot Taurus and S&W revolvers. Check their catalogs/sites.

They are not small guns, if concealment and all-day carry matter, six rounds with you would be of more value than eight left at home because the gun is heavy.
