My brother just gave me our grandfathers berreta tip barrel 8 shot 380.I dont think it has ever been fired.I know this because I drove him to go buy it and I'm the only one that would take him to the range.I already own a like modle but without the tip barrel. As safe space is getting short wich should I keep? (pics to follow)

Both good, however, in the case of a misfire in the "tip barrel " you will have to use a pencial to push out the bullet, the reason it has a tip up barrel is because it doesn't have an extractor.

I think the 86 Cheetah with the tip up barrel has been discontinued, last new one I saw was asking about $600, so its the one I'd keep, as "most collectable" since its a fairly unique design.

Yes the 86 lacks an extractor, but the tip up barrel is a real boon to small hands that can't rack the slide (like my wife) on most guns. I find letting the barrel spring up usually throws out an unfired round. Despite not having an extractor its 100% with Wolf steel cased ammo that my locked breech, extractor having P3AT chokes on with extraction failures!

tip up bbl

+1 for anyone with arthritis or limited use of their hand(s)--chamber 1st round without having to work the slide.

Well, whichever you decide not to keep, you can give to me! That way you won't take up too much space in a crowded safe.

There's always more room in my house!

Seriously, I don't get rid of guns lightly. I absolutely will not release a family gun, unless to another family member when the time comes.

Keep both, get rid of a Glock :)

In all seriousness, the '86 is both the harder to re-obtain and the one you'll like best in your old age when you can't rack the slide on the 85. Mine is more accurate as well, because of either the slightly heavier weight or the slightly longer barrel on the '86. My '85, though, is right now a carry gun while the '86 is a safe queen....the '85 is easier to carry. One other thought, if you do get rid of one and have extra mags, the mags are interchangable if you weren't aware, so keep the extras for the pistol you keep.

Personally, I like the tip-barrelled gun, especially for CCW.
No worries about bullet setback when you put one in the chamber.

I have a .32ACP Tomcat. The tip-up barrel is my favorite feature of this gun.

I always liked the tip up barrel feature of the 86 for as stated, chambering a round without having to cycle the slide, as well as being
able to determine is there a round in the chamber. I don't understand
the No Extractor statement - How do empties get ejected? surely the
barrel doesn't tip up infiring a round it's a blowback fixed
barrel AFAIK, the barrel surely can't tip up for shell ejection
during one firing cycle ???***???

Ehm...

The tip up version has a slide and extractor same as the standard version. It just offers you the option of tipping it up for loading purposes if you don't have the manual strength to rack a slide. Function and extraction is otherwise the same.

The Tomcat has no extractor and relies on the magspring to drive out the empty shell, completely different platform.

I assure you there is no extractor on the Beretta 86 FS "Cheetah". There is however an ejector on the frame.

The empties come flying out the back as the bullet goes flying out the front -- its how blowback guns work, the extractor is really only there to extract loaded rounds to unload the weapon. With the 86 you have to tip the barrel up to empty the chamber. The ejector is there to deflect the empties to the side so they don't fly at your face.

I have other Grandpa guns 30-06 savage,22 marlin,S&W .38 revolver and stevens bolt/auto 22.This would have been mine too it was placed in the wrong box between my brother and me(he is scared of guns). My grandfather bought it after he swa mine and the tip barrel sold him because he was losing strength in his hands.I was just curious if one was better than the other I just dont have the space to be repetive if one is going to go it will most likely wont be grandpa's.

off topic, but HK promo tape of p7 had extractor removed, and worked fine.

I would not sell my grandfather's gun.

However, since you are in CA you could sell it for quite a bit of cash since I do not think the tip up is on the DOJ list (you should double check this). As a result, one of the very few ways for a Californian to get his hands on one is through a PPT of such a gun already in state.

I wanted to get a tip-barrel for my wife at one time. She is more comfortable with revolvers, but like a little Beretta Minx I once owned.

Indeed wally, I mean to say that the tip up has an ejector internally rather than an extractor. Upon firing the slide will retract ejecting the empty.

I wouldn't sell either unless I had to. It seems like the tip up is the rarer of the two. That may make it the better one to sell, or keep depending on what your collecting goals are.
