I just got a deal on a 20 Gauge 390. It came with no manual.

When I reassembled it, it has a small (maybe 1/16") gap between the receiver and the rib. The barrel can move back and forth the length of that gap, against heavy spring tension.

Is this right? Or is it supposed to go together so that the barrel is solid against the receiver?

If so, any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks!

Both of mine have the barrel tight against the receiver. It does sometime seem difficult to get the spring to protrude through the hole in the fore end. Maybe that is holding it off?

This should get you to a manual. It is for the 3901, but it is essentially the same gun.

Click on the download tab, and then click on the PDF. That will get you a manual.

Yep. I've taken out just about everything. I bought a used one that had a recoil spring that was making all kinds of screeches and scratches when it cycled. I removed it, wrapped a 9mm brush with 0000 steel wool, chucked it in my drill and polished away. The thing had apparently spent some time in the bottom of a duck blind because it was full of rust. I then installed a new spring and now instead of screech, scratch I get a very nice metallic ching when I release the bolt. Part of my cleaning routine is to push the recoil spring guide down the tube with a 10" philips screwdriver and send a good squirt of Rem Oil down the tube to insure no future rust.

The plug isn't as bad as it looks. Push the little spring retainer back in the hole and screw the end off. Hang on to it, because the spring will send it sailing when it clears the threads.

I believe these are just about as good as it gets in an auto loader.

This is a somewhat rare, as in oddball, 20 Gauge -- NIB recent production, made in Italy, matte/synthetic -- and I took it to the clays range for testing. I'd have to agree. It's a GREAT gun. I just printed the manual, well worth the minor nuisance for the money I saved on the thing since it came with no factory docs.:)
