Kinda lusted after a "Black Baer" 1911 until I saw the $2900 price tag.

No disrespect for Les Baer, whom I admire, but does anyone know of a maker of one more moderately priced with a decent trigger?

I think those are your main choices.
Kimber and Springfield offer 4" bushingless models for the Commander niche.

A good trigger pull is a matter of luck, selection among guns in stock, or gunsmith work.

Buying a Les for the trigger is like buying a Porche for the paint; sure it's nice, but there's a lot more to it.

If you want a 4.25" 9mm with a nice trigger, buy any major maker's gun and spend $300 on tools, parts, and Kuhnhausen's manual.

I have a Springfield RO Elite Commander in 9MM that I like a lot. A lot less than a LB too :)

Note Springfield makes a Range Officer Elite Champion and not a Commander, since the Springfield has a 4" barrel and not a 4.25" barrel that the OP is looking for.

OP might not care if it is 4" or 4 1/4". Opens up his options if not.

I had a "Commander" length Kimber 9MM I foolishly sold. I can be such a dufus sometimes.

I routinely outshoot my father's Wilson CQB 9mm with my DW Valkyrie and VBob. The Valkyrie is in 9mm.

Rugers have decent triggers and make a nice cheaper 9mm option as well.

Heh! To be sure. That’s a great reply.

Buying cognac, the quality levels are priced at approximately $16, $32, $64, $128, $256, $512, it pays to experiment to see where the ROI drops off. I can make due with a $32 bottle of cognac and feel comfortable.

Perhaps I should have asked different questions to winnow down to those models whose characteristics make them quality, affordable shooters for an older guy ready to retire who would love a comfortable, reliable, accurate, practical, affordable 1911-style 9MM to use regularly.

Or, if someone wants to pass on a Les Baer Black Baer for me to treasure, I’d settle for that.

I don't know about the Black Baer but you can get a pretty nice Baer for under $2,000. Just search on the 1911 forums and you will find the suggested source. I don't think he is a sponsor so I can't list it. I gave $1600 for my Premier II just a few years back.

Yeah, Good catch ! It's their version of a Commander. Either way I like it and it could be an option for the OP.

I have a RIA 4.25" .22TCM/9mm combo pistol. I think they run about $600 now. Yes it's inexpensive, but not cheaply made. It's a regular bushing barrel, not a bull barrel. It is not on the level of fit and finish of a Les Baer (no surprise) but it has never failed to function and shoots accurately with both barrels. I have the HC model but it is available in a single stack configuration. The trigger was pretty good out of the box and I did a trigger job a couple of months ago, improving it to just under 4lbs.

I think the question is: Do you just want something that shoots well in the 4.25" size, or are you wanting something with a "name" on it that indicates a certain level of purchase?

A shooter need not have the advanced fit and finish that I see in my Dan Wesson govt model, but I sure do admire that pistol for what it is in addition to enjoying it when I shoot. I would like to have a nice Les Baer. I probably won't spend the money for one.

For the money, I'd go with a Ruger SR1911 Commander and spend the rest on ammo. Series 70 design, well made and backed with excellent customer service. Oh sure, it's no high dollar gun, but again, I said for the money...it's a great value.

I had a Springfield 4in Range Officer compact that was dead nuts reliable and had a decent trigger. It does have the captured spring that’s a pain in the ass to takedown but it ran good and carried nice. I think it’s one of the best deals for the money vs. features. I got mine I think for $775.

I traded it to a buddy for a colt officers 22 target, which is one of my favorite plinkers now. But I still miss that Springfield 45 when I want to carry a mid size.

I have a Ruger lightweight fine pistol over all but the recoil spring should be replaced mine had failure to feed. I replaced it with a Wilson 12 lb spring,no more ftf.

I bought a used Black Baer last summer for half what they are new, and it is the most accurate 1911 I've ever owned. I have a DW Valor Commander in 9mm that is a great gun, but it's no Baer.

I'd still suggest a Dan Wesson, Springfield R.O. Champion (commander). They're all good.
