.40 cal pocket pistol?

Was wondering if anybody knows of a reliable .40 cal pocket pistol?

I already have plenty of .40 ammo, so it would be nice if I could go with .40 for a mouse-gun on days when I can't carry using traditional ways.

If I don't find a .40 cal mouse-gun, then I'll probably just go with some sort of revolver, although that wouldn't be able to be in .40.

I used to own a Kahr MK40 ... regret selling it too.

Although a bit on the heavy side of "pocket pistol" it was reliable. They make a polymer framed one (I've read mixed reviews on them though).

well, I used to own their PM9 and it was a jammomatic.

I wonder about the MK40 though.

From what I read, a lot of the jamming stems from the flexbile polymer frame. It's much softer than say - my Glocks. I can fire my Glock 27 all day and never have a jam, but a few shots with the PM9 and I'd get a jam.

if it fits in a pocket, I might be willing to try the MK.

so do I - it's my primary carry choice

but sometimes I can't carry it (too big even though it's subcompact). I'm looking for something to carry on those days without sacrificing too much stopping power.

Kahr MK40 has a great reputation. The MK40 is the smallest .40 I could find in my search for a CCW. Their polymer firearms are the ones you always hear about having problems.

I recently acquired a barely-used MK40 (previous owner claimed only one magazine). It's about the largest gun that will fit in a jeans back pocket, though just barely. Jeans hip pockets depend on the brand and size, but it works fine in cargo pants or slacks. It sure is heavy, but that may be because I've been spoiled by the Fantastic Plastic. My Glock 23 (with tungsten recoil spring guide rod, which adds about an ounce to the weight) weighs exactly the same as the MK40 (both empty with magazine). 25 ounces. Still isn't that much of a burden in a pants pocket.

Don't know about the reliability of this particular one since I haven't had the chance to shoot it yet. It's definitely a small gun, about the size of the .380s of yesteryear.

There is no TRUE pocket pistol in 40. The round is too large with too much pressure to qualify as a "mouse gun." The Kahr is a fine gun. I owned a couple in 9mm which are basically the same size as the 40. I owned the K series and the E series guns. They were all satinless and were flawless at the range. Of course neither of these guns fit in a pocket, except really big pockets. I now own several AMT Backups, 2 45's, 1 40, 1 357sig, 1 9mm. I carry the 40 as my primary most of the time. The AMT is just a little shorter and just a little thinner than the Kahr MK40, and while its "blocky" grip frame does not look as nice to me as the grip frame on the Kahr, it actually fits my large hands better and allows me to shoot the AMT better. I guess pretty is as pretty does. Just like 40's from Kahr and the now discontinued Kel Tec, there have been some reported reliablity problems with the AMT, but I have not experieneced any with mine that a little TLC did not take care of. I have not heard of anyone who has an AMT made by the new owner, High Standard, all of my guns are older guns.

While the AMT will fit in many pockets, it is really too large and too heavy for that purpose, as all functional 40's are, but the AMT and the Kahr is as close as you are going to get to a pocket 40, with the AMT a little smaller. See the size comparison in Bobo's chart at the top of the forum.

But for a semi auto, yes, the .40 is just outside the traditional "pocket pistol" range.


I've owned two MK Kahrs (a 9 and a 40) both were reliable, the 9 I have now is more accurate (althought that's most likely an operator issue). 90% of the complaints about Kahr pistols are about their poly ones. The steel ones are great. I also don't find the weight to be much of an issue, but I didn't pocket carry in the pants, I have occasionally pocket carried in a jacket pocket (but honestly, my wife's got a KelTec P3AT and I don't like pocket carrying it either ... and I can't imagine a more comfortable pocket pistol than that).
