I went to the range the other day with my Steyr S9 and S40. I shot 100 rounds of 9mm and 56 rounds of 40.cal WWB. Had a good time. :D

When I got home and started cleaning them I notice something, the 40.cal was quit a bit dirtier than the 9mm. Both guns started out clean and I used the same brand of ammo for both guns, but the barrle on the .40 was about twice as nasty as the 9mm.

Has anyone else noticed this or may have an explantion?

its whats in the cartridge that matters not the headstamp on the case.

what powder was it the same, bullet end exposed lead or closed. primer type and manufacture.

I just got done sorting through depriming and sizing 1,000 once-fired cartridges of 40S&W.

got some 500 of cci,100-150 of Federal,100-150 Winchester, some fiochi GFL,PMC,Remington RP, one EL D. few magtech.

learned quite a bit going through all of them.

some custom remington loads were near spotless inside and out. could easily tell it from factory load.

It has nothing to do with 9mm vs 40. It has to do with what powder they use. I remember when the 40 first came out the Winchester white box was very dirty. The second case I got was very different - clean and it even had less muzzle blast.

Poor assumption.Take a look at a reloading book and see how many different powders they have.

Load some with Unique if you want to see dirty. You will think you are shooting a black powder firearm with that crap.

The variations of available powder is quite amazing actually.

I'd say it's PROBABLE they did not have the same powder. Different caliber, bullet weight, case pressures...the optimal (or in this case cheapest) powder for .40 may not be / probably isnt the same for the 9mm. Check out a reloading manual sometime...lots of different powders producing completely different loads for the same round.
