40 S&W 165 Gr. Load

I have a box of Berry Plated 165 Gr. Truncated Point bullets and found that neither my Hornady, nor my Hodgdon manuals have any load data for this bullet weight. I have Longshot powder I'd like to use, but am willing to get another kind if that's best.

The Hodgdon manual has loading for 135 Gr Nosler JHP showing 12 Gr of Longshot. They also show 8 Gr of Longshot for a 180 Gr Hornady XTP. Would I be safe to start with maybe 9-10 Gr of Longshot with the 165 Gr Berrys?

Any ideas?

Careful

Hodgdon's web site has your load data. Better go check it out soon, because your 9 to 10 grain suggestion would blow you up for sure.

Go to hodgdon.com and go to the Reloading Data Center (not Download Data Manual, but Reloading Data Center). Follow the directions.

load them with lead bullet data.

start with 7.0 gr then work up enough to cycle the slide properly.

i use hs-6 and generally load that and LS pretty close

I do Rainier 165gr plated hollow points and have found 7.5gr of Longshot to work great. I find the bullet weight and starting load and work from there. Do not go max with plated bullets, it can deform the bullets and usually does not provide the best accuracy.

Good advice so far! A 165 plated and 8.0 gr Longshot will give you around 1000 fps, depending on barrel length and weapon.

Suggest start at 7.0 gr and work up in 0.3 gr increments, not to exceed 8.0 gr WARNING which is slightly over listed max listed load for JHP. Watch for leading as you go.

Old data for JHP was up to 9.0gr. Golden Sabre 165 at that load were abusive and not very accurate. 1206 fps avg. shot 3" groups at 25 yards but were high right.
