I interviewed for a parole officer job this week. They issue Glock 23s. You can carry any any 40 S&W, so long as the weapons officer okays it.

I need your thoughts on a gun in 40 caliber for use as a concealed carry duty pistol.

I'm thinking Glock 27, maybe a CZ P-06, M&P Compact, Springfield XD Compact. Is there anything I'm missing?

Personally I would stick with the Glock 23. Perfect sized gun for CCW plus it is free and they will maintain it.

If it is available take a look at the Sig P229, it is large enough to shoot comfortably and small enough to easily conceal with good belt / holster.

Take what is free and use their gun. Then on your own, buy whatever you want in the caliber you prefer. If you really want to use your own gun, what are your preferences and what are the job requirements (i.e. is there a list of features that it has to have)?

If the sky is the limit, how about a .40S&W 1911?

I am a bit of a SIG fan now days. I love my 229 and it would be concealable. If you want more concealment (it is a double stack so it is a little thick) the 239 is a good choice.

I love my Taurus PT140 Millennium Pro, it has been a great gun. I'd also consider the slightly larger PT940.

The new S&W M&P looks very good. I'm hearing some really good things about this gun. They feel good in the hand. I may consider one of these soon in either .40S&W or .45ACP myself.

The FNP looks interesting as well. If the M&P wasn't proving to be so good the FNP would be one of the more interesting of the new polymer pistols to me. Still, even with the M&P the FNP in .40S&W is on my list of guns to consider.

The reason I want my own gun, is that in my jurisdiction, pasrole officers may not wear their duty gun when not on the clock. If I use my own pistol, I can carry 24 hours (by state law, P/O's are law enforcement officers).

I've been a fan of CZ pistols in 9mm, because of their grip ergonomics, pointability, accuracy and reliability.

The current CZ lineup has a weak spot in the 40 S&W caliber. However, late last year, they came out with the CZ P-06. The P-06 is a 40 caliber version of their P-01 pistol.

I own the CZ P-01, and its possibly one of the best 9mm pistols I've ever carried. Its lighter than most at 25 ounces (but not as light as the Glock's 21 ounces). Like some Glock models, its got a NATO stock number, which means the model has survived the insane NATO torture test.

The Smith & Wesson M&P 40 Compact has nice grip ergonomics, and its weight is also somewhere around the Glock. It has a better grip angle for my shooting style, and points well. There's nothing to suggest it wouldn't be an adequate pistol.

Glock pros: Consistent trigger pull, reliability, weight.
Glock cons: Blocky grip, fingertip trigger pull (I prefer the distal joint)

CZ pros: Grip ergos, pointability (for my shooting style), accuracy
CZ cons: Gritty triggers out of the box, heavier than the Glock (Lighter than the SIG)

I would buy my own G23 and then you could carry all the time, and you would be comfortable doing so because you carry the same weapon at work. Not to mention it is a great gun. You could always wait a month or two and see how you like the G23 that is issued to you before you make a decision.
