I was shooting reloads today out of my normally very reliable springfield P9Ultra. The loads were 155 grn Berry RN's with 6.6 grns of AA5, cci500 primers, starline brass loaded to 1.132 COL.

The rounds were consistently jamming the first 3 or 4 rounds out of the magazine against the top of the barrel hood. To clear the jam I either had to drop the mag and the round would fall out, or pull the slide back slightly and push the bullet in the chamber and then drop the slide again.

I was thinking the problem is one of 3 things. One the recoil spring needs changing (2000 rnds on it so far). Two the COL is to long, 1.132 should be more like 1.125. Or three the mag spring needs to be replaced (springs are at least 8 years old, never stored loaded).

I have fired the gun over 6,900 times and this is a very recent (today) problem that I have not encountered before. Normally this gun is 100% reliable.

Any suggestions or ideas?

If I understand you right you're saying the nose of the bullet is jamming against the hood. If that's the case it could be the COL but if you can try another magazine. Your feed lips may be bent just a little. George

You have it correct that it is the nose of the bullet jamming on the hood.

Do you think I need to go longer or shorter?

I was at 1.132 and max is 1.135 for the 40. I can drop down shorter, but I would have to rework the load.

Psst. It's the ammo. You said it was reloads, didn't you? If you went back to the old brand ammo you were using, it probably wouldn't jam.

Now, if it's the same brand of reloads as before, the factory could have adjusted its dies and that changes the ammo (it may be spec, but your gun doesn't like that spec).

Gary,

They were my reloads. The main difference is I usually use remington or winchester 150 grn FMJ's or 180 grn FMJ's and I tried a bunch of Berry's 180 grn FMJ's. I am now convinced that is the problem. I will burn the rest of the 300 rnds in my beretta 96 because that is the gun I test the reloads in.

Thanks for the advice.

Whenever I see a pistol suddenly start to go badm and reloaded ammo is being used, I look to the reload first and then the gun.
