Just tried throwin some 40gr. ballistic tips down range, in .223. using varget. It's what I have. Anyway, groups were not so good until I jumped from 26grains to 26.5gr. grouping went from a bit over one inch to easily half inch and less.

I've never had such a drastic change in performance before, dying to go back out and duplicate. Anyone else experience this?

just for note's, Sako Varmiter with 1 in 12

Yep. Favorite bullet for ground squirrels in .223

I've never used Varget before in bullets lighter than 60 grn. Besides, with as hard as Varget is to find right now I need hoarde it all for .308 loads.

I usually use Benchmark or TAC for the 40 grainers. You can really push them if you want, I think the loads I like are around 3500 fps. They really have a striking effect when they hit a squirrel at that speed.:)

.223 to me seems to have such a small case that it doesn't take much of an increase in the charge to open or close a group up. I've got some targets here from some H335 loads I worked up that go from great at 25 grns, to crap at 26, and back to great by 27.

With my .25-06 it seems I need a couple of grains to make much of a difference.

The load of choice in both of my .223's for accuracy and speed is a 40 gr. Nosler with 27.5 gr. H335 and a Remington 7 1/2 primer. Shoots in the 3/8" outside to outside groupings.

I am running 40gr Vmax over 27gr H335 and a Remington 7 1/2. Shoots about 1 MOA out of my DPMS Bull 20".
