40rd AK-47 Mags

just go with steel surplus or bulgarian waffle mags.

The bulgarian waffles are made by arsenal and have steel feed lips and locking lugs overbolded by plastic. the plastic mag you posted doesn't have steel where it needs to be.

The only problem is that bulgarian waffle mags are getting a little pricy.:what::cuss:

Better stick with the steel stuff as they are very affordable.

My opinion of the clear plastic mags like this is that they look nifty on a wall hanging or otherwise displayed rifle and thats about it.

In fact I'm not in much favor of plastic mags in general, that said I do have one bulgarian waffle mag and the couple times I used it it did what it was suppose to do.

The cheapo generic plastic mag I picked up at a local sporting goods store made me :cuss: and :banghead: when I went to the range and dropped it while I was carrying everything to the shooting area. It landed on a piece of landscaping timber and snapped the top section off. Brand new. I looked about like this :what: as 30 rounds of ammo, follower and spring flew everywhere about the shooting line. I got my money back for it and haven't bought cheapo mags since.

The plastic AK mags may be OK with 5.45x39 but the only AK failures in 7.62x39 I've ever had have been with plastic AK mags -- US made and Bulgarian.

If the tapco mags are working for you then good, I prefer the metal ones. I have enough plastic on my AK's already to make Mr Kalashnikov roll in his grave as it is I figure I'll stick with the standard metal mags.

Now don't get me wrong you can get one that has a dent in the body and that can cause problems but they are pretty durable. Aim surplus seems to be cheapest on 30 rd metal mags, and it looks like cdnn is a couple bucks cheaper on the 40 rd mags than other places.

The metal ones are most likely going to be some type of surplus even if they look brand new, take them apart and clean them out.

^^^I use Russian bakelites for all my shooting....^^^

Must be nice to have 1000 bucks in mags:what:

My ProMags (plastic/poly) work great so far and, theyre $10-$15/piece, not $40-$50.

Yesterday at a local gunshow I purchased for $20 a 40 round steel mag of unknown origin. A few minutes ago I loaded it and cycle 40rnd of yugo 7.62x39 through it in a WASR rifle. When full it required more force to feed than when empty. I have no doubts that it will work fine in the field. Perhaps I will load it with only 39 rounds.
I only bought the 40rnder because I did not have a 40 rounder. I really do not need it.

The plastic USPLAM 30 round AK mags are very good, perhaps the best in the world. I have one, but decided I already have enough good steel ones to not need any more 30rnd mags.

While I mostly use 30rd steel mags in my AK's, I do have four of the black plastic Polish mags that have been absolutely faultless.
40rd mags, I don't have...they are illegal in Ohio. (I should say, illegal to use...they are legal to own).

I really like the Tapco magazines, but the one thing that I am worried about is whether or not they'll hold up when I need them. So I think I'll get some of the cheap Tapco mags for plinking, but stock up on the metal mags.

I'm going to be making an order from CDNN soon, so I think I might throw in one of the clear 40 rounders just to see what they're made of.

In the end, I think I'll just order one of each magazine available, then torture test them all and see how they hold up. Whichever one holds up the best, I'll order the most of.:)
