.41 Mag Association

I think I'll try 18gr of Ba6-1/2 with a 215gr bullet for a medium load,

Just be aware... once you move into the slower powders, you are going to get some serious muzzle blast with that short barreled Ruger.

Congrats on the pistol, by the way... and particularly NOS! That was a diamond in the pile, for sure.

First range session with the Blackhawk went well!
I didn't bring my Chrony but tried a dozen loads with Vectan Ba9 (eq Unique) and Ba6-1/2 (eq H110).
For light loads I used 7.5gr of Ba9 with 210, 215 & 225gr bullets, pleasant to shoot, not too loud.
Heavy loads, still within published data, Ba6-1/2, up to 19.5gr with a 210gr HP and 19gr with a 225gr WFN. I saw a little bit of flattening of the primers but easy extraction. Vectan data indicates a max load of 19.8gr with a 210gr XTP, but I'm happy to stop at 19.5 with my cast bullets, given this first pressure sign.
Even these max loads weren't unpleasant to shoot. I probably wouldn't want to shoot a box of 50 in a row, but definitely not as jarring as the .44 Mag. I'm really liking the 41 so far :)
I tried powder coating for the first time this week-end, and it is so much easier and cleaner than regular lubrication! Also allows me to color-code loads. I wonder if I should maybe use Liquid Alox on top of powder coating for heavy loads.. That would add a potential mess I'm not fond of dealing with.. Opinions?
Next session I'll chrono all my loads.
Gil.

New toy in the house today. I've collected a modest number of 41s over the years and found another yesterday. Already had a few Henrys in 41 but I didn't grab one of the Golden Boy carbines with octagon barrel when they were available. Fast forward, I found one at a gun show NIB at a fair price. I doubt I'll ever shoot it but I didn't have one and now I do.

Don't let the Good Life pass you by... SHOOT that thing!

I shot my no dash 4” Model 57 today with .41 Special loads. I put together loads with a .210 gr plated TCFP over 6.8 gr Unique, WLP primers and Starline cases.

I found these loads a bit snappier than my .44 Special loads with a 215 SWC over the same 6.8 gr Unique in a 629 Mountain Gun .44 Mag. I can merely guess the smaller internal volume of the .41 Spl cases pushed pressures higher than the .44 Spl were. (This .41 Spl load is safe and can be pretty accurate in my three .41 Mag revolvers.)

DA at 10 yds on a B-29 knock off target. The shots outside the 9 ring are completely my fault. 😞

Stay safe.

I don't own any brass molds but it sure does make a nice looking mold. All of mine are either steel or aluminum. I'm really admiring yours!

I've been through my share of Ruger SA pistols, including... finally... one in .41MAG. Even that pistol was not right, and in a fit of anger I sold it off... disgusted with Ruger pistols, swearing I'd never own another one.

...but, I have to admit, if I found a clean .41 like that... I would be tempted. :)

I rolled the odometer over this past weekend... I turned 58. So, to celebrate leaving 57 behind, and embracing 58... I took both my 57 and 58 to the range Sunday! Actually, that's was just a secondary reason... real reason was I wanted to test a new bullet I got... the X-treme plated 210grn TC .41 bullet. My purpose for this bullet was a less toxic round for indoor shooting... where the fully plated bullet would be much cleaner than a cast bullet, which I admit was getting a little long in the tooth... breathing that toxic cloud of lead yumminessness. Not.

Anyway... much like Rio's light .41 load above, I loaded 10 rounds with 8grn Unique, and 10 rounds with 9grn Unique, in .41MAG brass. Good news was... the pistols seemed to like the lighter, 8grn Unique load the best... the 57 giving me about 2" at 15yds, including 1 3-round cloverleaf in the center. The 58 is not quite as accurate with the same load as the 57, but I admit... it's still filthy from the last few range sessions. I also gave the revolvers a few spins with some other loads as well.

Not to be left behind... I also brought the .41 Marlin. I didn't shoot any of the new X-treme bullets in that... that's not what I bought them for, but I may test drive them in it, anyway, just to see how they handle higher velocity. Standard 1894 load is 20grn IMR4227 under a commercially cast 215grn SWC. It likes this load, and does very well with it.

The .41 is a dangerous caliber because it can be a "gateway" to magnumitis.

Nope, magnum shooters don't need the "special" version... google "Specialitis" and you come up with zilch :) I / we don't need no stinking "special" calibers!

Anyway, the .41 Is more manageable for shooters coming from Bambi Secret Agent friendly calibers, it can be a bit more stingy on lead (if you cast) and powder than the bigger boomers AND you get to have space at the range when the auto guys start clearing out because they don't like the boom! Add to this, the .41 will take down any animal (2 or 4 legged) in the lower 48 too. What's not to like?

Now that I've had my fun, here's a pic of mine from top... S&W nickle 57, Ruger Bisley, Stainless S&W 657, and no I don't have a fave. Does a guy with a harem have a fave wife? Or, does he "love the one he's with"? That's me, I love the one I'm with :)

Does Henry still make a 41 mag?
Their website shows they do. I was shopping for one and asked my LGS about ordering one. He told me they were hard to get, but couldn't say if it was because of low production numbers or high demand. I would have liked one with the blued steel finish and an octagonal barrel but it doesn't come that way..

I ended up finding a Big Boy with the brass receiver in .45 Colt and am entirely happy with it. It had a side gate to load from which neither of the .41's had, and it's much more convenient than having to drop them down the tube.
