.41 Mag Association

For deer I had been using a 215gr LSWC with a little over 19gr of H-110, but I am switching to the 170gr Sierra JHC with 24.8gr of H-110.
I won't comment on the loads, but that 170 gr Sierra JHC is a dandy bullet in the .41...holds together as well as the 210's and offers greater speed with less recoil.

That said, I cast my own 210 gr Lyman LSWC's of a 50-50 lead to wheel weigh alloy and get great penetration with some expansion as well. They do lead if you pound more than a cylinder or two through a M-57 Smith, but the accuracy is there for the first dozen or so.

I've used 2400, H-110, Ac#9, and 296 with both...up around the max load area (better than 1250 fps in the revolver) with outstanding accuracy. Best regards, Rod

20.8grn W296 under the aforementioned 210grn Remington JSP's... in the Marlin... gets you almost 1800fps! Yeee haw!

For those of you who like heavy cast, I had some of the wonderful Cast Performance 250grn gas checked WFN's... 19grn W296 gave me 1330fps in the 6" Dan Wesson, but 1660fps in the Marlin. Talk about a sledgehammer....

HOT! 210 pushing 1800!

My play load is 8-8-1/2 grains of Unique and my hotter load is the same bullet over 2400.

It's funny how many .41 shooters use that basic recipe... 8-9grn Unique for mid-range loads, and the slow boomers like 2400, IMR4227, and W296 for the Magnums. It's nearly universal.

Of all the powders I've had on my bench in 30+ years, save one short foray with BlueDot (before the Alliant warning against it...) I've never used any other powders besides Unique, and the Slow 3 to load .41's.

Just a word or two about .41 Magnum bore & throat tolerances: IIRC, Brian Pearce noted in one of his excellent articles, that he'd found that any .41 Magnum & from a variety of manufacturers, in his experience, kept to the SAAMI tolerances: 0.410" bore with throats very close to that. He suggested that was the reason the caliber was so famous for out of the box, universal, accuracy....I agree.

My experience mirrors his with four Rugers (one 3-screw old model, and 3 NM's) as well as my Smith M-57 built in the early 70's. And when I was finally able to find a Marlin 1894S in .41, I found that, [contrary to Marlin's usual practice of overly large throats], it too exhibited tight tolerances: 0.410-0.411" bore & throat. Halleluiah!! Wish I could say the same for my .357, .30-30, .35 Remington & .44 Magnum's. All are accurate but all require lead alloy bullets that are 0.002-3" over normal groove dia. for the cartridge. These are all Micro-groove bbl's, to include the .41 Mag 1894S.

As a happy result of these tight tolerances in the .41 Mag 1894, I size no differently for rifle or handgun when casting my own: Lyman's 220 gr LSWC and the RCBS equivalent, both w/o gas checks and neither leads with moderately high velocities either. These are wheel weight alloy bullets, with a BHN of ~12, and I don't even bother to water quench them. They just work well enough as is.

It truly is, was, and will continue to be a well designed caliber with guns that took advantage of it's capabilities. Best Regards, Rod

Knock knock knock… pause knock…pause knock knock…hopefully that is the correct pattern to get let in to this exclusive club. I have heard that I need to send checks or money orders…?.;) What do I need to get in? Plus I want to beat @Mark_Mark in, which as it looks is to busy looking at model 14’s which I guess is getting closer to getting in, at least he has the numbers together just in the wrong order. What is the procedure?

WORKING ON IT! 😂

What is the procedure?

Usually you buy a .41MAG, which grants you a Limited Membership. Once you realize how great the .41 is, you buy another... giving you access to the perks of Standard Membership. Beyond that, it's secret skwerrel stuff... a 3rd .41 gets you Gold Membership... but if you really want that Platinum Membership card, you have to sell all your other revolvers, in a secret ceremony denounce all other handgun cartridges as inferior to the .41, and swear allegiance to the One True Handgun Cartridge... or just get a rifle in .41, easy peasy.

And, showing your unconverted Ruger 3-screw at the door grants you admission to the Old Breed Room.

We have an open bar...

You guys are killing me! My ribs hurt from laughing so much!!! :p

Don't forget to ask about the extra points that you can get for having a bullet mold for the 41 Mag! ;)

My Dan Wesson came with a key to the express elevator to the Penthouse... open bar... and cookies!
Sorry, not to burst your bubble but keys to the penthouse are only available to model 58s or a GENUINE 3" Lew Horton owners. To see what's behind the green door you need a Freedom Arms 41 or stainless Marlin in 41. Keep climbing.

You .41 mag folks are on a level of your own! Like the people who wear antique watches worth $$$$$ but wear it so nobody can see it! like if RainMan was a Billionaire

Maybe I mixed them up... I got my Dan Wesson and my model 58 from the same guy... so I might be forgetting. Oddly enough, he also had a 3" Lew he offered to me, but I want nothing to do with a 3" .41MAG... ;)

I think the stainless Marlin is the rooftop party zone... my Marlin FG won't get me up there, but it does give me a reserved table in the corner of the Penthouse.

I can see the penthouse on the horizon, hopefully I can park out front later today and watch all the cool guys walk in. With a little luck I may make my way inside and hop in the elevator later tonight. The pictures to come will tell what floor I will be stepping out on….stay tuned
Oooohh, I'm all a-quiver.

I myself only have a measly S&W Model 57-6, so they haven't let me past the bike room yet. Be nice to the peasants as you saunter by us.
