.41 Mag Association

Doing some reloading this morning. Since I started coating my cast bullets I have a renewed interest in in the lee 210gn swc. I have been less than impressed with it for the most part as I find the lube grooves dont hold a sufficient amount of lube. I switched to a long discontinued lee 240gn swc also from lee but with traditional style lube grooves, it’s a great bullet but the mold is old and has a little trouble aligning properly so I wanted to give the new mold another go.
Loaded up 50rnds with 20.0gn of h110 kicked off with a winchester primer. May try and get outside to give them a go today if we get a break in the rain here. Hope all you fellow 41 fans have a good day!

They look like tiny Thermos bottles. I got tons (well, ounces) of both 210 plated and 210 JHP; what I'l like to find is something around 175-180 grain. Any sources?

I’ve heard good things about this company but never got around to ordering anything. Like anywhere else, looooong waits, but the prices are good and they have Bullets I’ve not seen offered many other places.

Barbaroja,
Whose blue powder did you use on those, they look great!
That would be “ Carolina Blue” that I bought from a user over on the castboolits forums. They are just tumbled in a yogurt container with the airsoft bbs that he also sells. Baked in a preheated toaster oven for 20mins @400 (or until golden brown and delicious). The seller was really easy to work with and had my box in the mail within 2 hours of sending the payment. I’m 100% buying from him again when I start to run low.

I’ll have to take your word on that. All I know is it works better than the others I have tried.

Little follow up on how they preformed.
They were a lot of fun to shoot, just loaded them up to have some heavy hitters to shoot with my neighbor. They did not disappoint at all. The 20gn of H110 should have them moving about 1300fps according to the book velocities (don’t own a chronograph yet). They had a serious muzzle flash and concussion wave but I guess that’s to be expected with h110.

Is all that flash wasted energy? Is it powder not being burned before exiting the barrel? Would I be better served by using a slightly faster burning powder? I would love to hear some thoughts on that.
I’m shooting them out of a 6.5” blackhawk.

For "heavy hitter" loads, I suggest heavier bullets.
The Montana bullet -240 gr LBT or
The CPC 250 gr LBT are both good examples.

I was speaking in terms of velocities when I said heavy hitter. I also cast and load a 240gn swc

I love me some Cast Performance 250grn WFN’s! I’ve also got a stash of Montana 240’s... I’ll be working with those next.

In a 6.5” H110 is reasonably efficient, just a lot going on. I think you would be better served with something like Unique (et al...) which can do about 75% of what H110 does.

I use H110 when I want top-end velocities...

With a 210, jacketed or cast, it is usually in the 22-23 grain range depending on the design of the bullet. I do some measuring and top out the load so that the base of the bullet is resting on top of the powder with just minor compression so there is no air space. This has always gotten me the highest velocity with the lowest standard deviation. Also a HEAVY crimp...

250 Cast Perforamce LBT-WFN...20.0 grains...1309/Freedom Arms 97/4.25" barrel

255 Cast Performance (no longer offered)...22.0 grains...1365/Freedom Arms 83/6"

I've shot these loads in S&Ws and Rugers but they are not pleasant....

Barbaroja...as to your question about H110 vs. another powder for the velocity you want to get from that 210 grain Lee bullet out of a 6.5" barrel... If you are just looking for 1300 fps you would probably be better served with a slightly faster powder and it will cost less per shot and have a lot less muzzle flash. 10.0 grains of Unique runs a 210 1200 fps from a 4" so should run right where you want from a 6". Using have the powder by weight and cheaper per pound...and will have a lot less flash. 2400 will require about 15-17 grains...

I use Unique for 90% of my .41 loads..8.0/9.0/10.0...makes life very simple...

Bob

That's roughly my recipe for those as well. Those go in the Marlin, and once in a blue moon the Dan Wesson... which is the only pistol I use for the heavy loads.

I made that load up for the the "little" FA 97 back about 15 years ago... Fired three of them from the gun about two years ago and said.."that's it"....and unloaded the last two.... The 250s with 8-9.0 grains of Unique is all the THUMP I need for S&Ws and smaller .41s... The FA 83s, Ruger Hunter or Gary Reeder Bisley get the "heavies" from now on...

I’m looking forward to trying out Unique. Some day, I guess. I did try a few 210xtp over 13 & 13.5 IMR Blue. 13 was good, 13.5; primers were mashed flat like dimes ran over by a train.

I started reloading almost 35 years ago. I was told back then that I should have some Unique on hand.

So, around 1987 I bought 2 pounds of it, and put it on the shelf.

Both pounds are still sitting on my shelf, unopened.

I have never used Unique, in anything.

But, I have it on hand.

What do you use for your midrange powder?

I did the same thing with red dot. I have a jar from the early 90’s. Loaded 8 rounds of 45acp, fired them, and never opened it again.

I bought 2# of RedDot during the last shortage... the dealer was pulling it out of the box and I grabbed it just to have something. I was perilously low on Unique, and it was Unobtanium at the time. I found it to be a pretty good powder for both .45ACP and .45 Colt, for strictly mid-range loads. I did, eventually, load it all up to get rid of it, but if Unique was not available, and there was some RedDot on the shelf... I'd grab it. That would also mean I had worked through the current inventory of Unique... around 12# of it. ;) I like Unique...

What do you use for your midrange powder?

Several choices.
For handgun: HS-6 (my absolute favorite in not-quite magnum loads), Universal( my 2nd choice), Accurate #'s 5 or 7, and a more recent choice is BE-86.
Even lighter loads is (of course) BullsEye and RedDot, Clays, HP-38/231.

For rifle: Universal, IMR 2400, RedDot (Promo), IMR 4198, IMR 4227, among others.
