so i stroll down to the local gun emporium today and decide it is time to spring for a smith 357 pd in 41 mag - should make a nice companion gun to my blackhawk hunting gun... so, i tell the counterguy what i want and he says the gun is discontinued. a check of smith's website shows nothing in 41 mag. wonderful.

so, here's what i am after... a double action 41 mag - and a 4-5" barrel would be good, but i suppose a decent gunsmith could turn any length longer than that into something the right length (i want to carry it in bear country while i'm hunting or hiking).

are there any options available? do any of the distributors still have some of those 357 pd's in stock?

A used S&W 657 (my favorite), 57, or 58 would be the way to go and probably easiest to find. The other choice would be a Ruger Redhawk.

If I were you I'd look for a Smith Model 57 Mountain Gun. One gunshop near me has a new one in stock. I would be glad to give you a phone number or a way to contact them. I have not been there in about two weeks. But the gun has been sitting in the case for a while and is probably still there. Just a phone call away. For that matter the local Sportsman Warehouse has a new 357PD also. Just takes money but I would prefer the steel framed one myself.

critter - pm inbound.

jbp - does ruger currently make the redhawk in 41, or are you saying i need to peruse used racks?

Ruger does not currently make the Redhawk in 41mag, but if you go to gun shows you can find them.......It only took me 5 years to find my first stainless Redhawk in 41mag then I found another just 6 months later. Both had 5.5" barrels. I already had one with a 7.5" barrel that I bought over 20 years ago. I decided to take one of the 5.5" and chop it to 4".....long before the new 4" came from Ruger. If you can wait to find one, it will be worth the wait. Here are mine.

Ruger 41 mag

Just saw one - Blackhawk- very reasonably priced- yesterday - used, some marks, but great bore at Seneca Arms in Green Lane, PA. Don't have the phone # handy but you can google it - John, the owner is as good as they get.

I have a 357 pd in a 4 inch version. I bought it to carry,(It is very light, and the front sight is easy to acquire).. It is sitting in my drawer next to its big brother a model 57 nickel in 6 inch. There are (3) 357 pd's on gunbroker right now (Snub nose) Just give it a little time and you will find one with a longer barrel. But think about this, is it me or is the 357 pd with the Titanium cylinder in contrast to the Scandium frame make it look ugly??
