If you are not familiar with the handling of firearms, simpler is better. A single shot is way better than no shot, and even a single shot with practice can be reloaded in only a couple seconds. It would be highly advisable to have someone who is familiar with firearms get you out to a safe place to practice with handling and shooting whatever your choice is. If that isn't possible...honestly, probably a Tazer or something similar is a better idea.
That said, H.Koons at least used to make what they called a "Snake Charmer" which was a short stocked relatively short single shot .410 with a synthetic pistol grip type barrel essentially made for carrying in "snaky" country. It would seem like in your situation it would work well.
Myself, even though I have everything from Colt 1911s and pump guns, etc. at my camp which my extended family use, there is a single shot .410 with a couple of the self defense loads nearby for any visitors who may find need for it. Super simple, super reliable. One glance and you can see if the single barrel is or isn't loaded. Pull back the hammer, and it will be ready to fire.
