I wanna 410 youth for my youngest son. I figure it is much safer than a youth 22 rifle.

Not for wing shooting. Stationary targets and small game.

Do not want a hammer.

What say you?

Spartan?

A .410 is a good choice for stationary targets or small game that stands still...

How big is your son, there are a lot of options.

A Mossberg 505 or one of the NEF single-shots are great "starter" guns.

Have you thought about a 20GA?? There are some extremely "light" 20 GA loads on the market such as the Fiocchi "20 lite", my 9-year-old can shoot these all day long without any problem. He uses a 500 Super-Bantam, this is the one with the spacers for the stock to lengthen it as he grows.... Recoil is so light, I have shot this gun with one hand held out at arm's length with no problems.

A .410 is an expert's gun. Get him a 28 gauge. It has a lot more oomph than its size would indicate.

The .410 is kind of a catch-22. Low recoil, but also harder to hit anything with.

Shoud work okay for the purposes you mentioned.

I would also suggest a 20 Gauge. It is adaptable to almost any sort of shooting, and can see your kid through a good number of years, especially something with an adjustable LOP like that Mossberg.

28 is nice in theory, but ammo prices are downright silly. If you're going to reload, you can load your own light 20's just as easily, and they'll be a lot like the 28's. However, standard 20 Gauge loads are also readily available for cheap, from Wal-Mart.
