G'day

Could some tell me what size 200grain lead bullet to use in my Winchester 94, 44-40.
Is it .427 or .429 .
The rifle was made in 1975

Thankyou for your time

.429 should work fine. with the pressure levels your working with .002 of an inch should cause no problems.

Groove diameter + .001" is nice and even bigger is good, but some .44-40s have groove diameters larger than what the chamber will accept. To discover the proper diameter bullet for your rifle, load a dummy round with each available diameter and see what is the largest that will chamber FREELY.

I have a .428" reline and with most brass cannot load .429" bullets. The only easy alternative is .427", there are not many commercial casters selling .428"s. I do have a brand that comes out at .4275", I guess his lubrisizer is worn, but they shoot well enough.

Winchester changed their barrel diameter from .427 to .429 in the early to mid 30's. Your barrel, if factory deminsion, is .429. Enjoy. I just sold mine and in a way, wish I didn't.
