I have found some 44-40 Winchester bullets (projectiles) here at a LGS. They are the jacketed Winchester SP's, but their diameter is .426. I've been shooting .428 in both my 44-40's. They both slugged out at .428. What problems would i encounter shooting these, if i wanted to use it for small game/deer. Smaller diameter, will it give me less accuracy? Not sure about this all, i haven't dealt with so many different 44-40 diameters.. they float around from .426 - .430. Just wondering what i'll be up against. I can get them for a really good price.

Thanks!

They will work fine. 44-40 lead rounds are in that range. Try taking one projectile 426 and push it down your barrel. It should still have some resistance. My 44-40 slugged out at .427. It was made in 1918!

Ideally the jacketed bullets should be zero to 0.001" under the groove diameter. Unjacketed lead lead should be 0.002" to 0.003" over the groove diameter.

A smaller diameter bullet just means a lower muzzle velocity. Unless the diameter is so small the rifling doesn't get enough grip.

Thanks guys.. that's exactly the info i needed. Was pretty sure about the lead bullet info, but wasn't sure at all about the jacketed. Appreciate it!
