Looking for something else and found some 44 451's. All the cap and ball revolvers I window browse recommend .454"s. Looking at old Cabelas B.P. guide it recommends .451's for some weapons. Any one use them for anything? What are they the preferred round for?

If they fit snug they'll shoot. IMO the preferred is to have .020 ring shave except for champhered cylinders. I like better than .020 simply because it provides more bearing area.
I bench load .457 in my Dragoon for the bearing area with heavier load pressure.
.457 in Walker for same plus I reamed the cylinder to .451 which drastically improved accuracy. The barrel bore is a tad over.
1858 and Colt get .454. lower load pressure so skipping possibility is less on less bearing area.
36 call get .380.

451s will work just make sure they shave a full circle when loading. When I run out of pure lead I cast with a .451 mold the balls fall at .452 and aren't too hard to load.

I use .451 in my older ASM 1860s BUT I use a lubed Ox felt Wonder wad under it and 32 grains of FFF powder. They barely shave a ring. I also use that ball in a little Pedersoli single shot screw on barrel, it is the preferred diameter. The Walker shaves the ball at .454 , barely but shoot s well with that, once again I use a lubed wonder wad and 42 grains of FFF in the Walker. My .45 rifle shoots patched .433 balls ! Go figure

As for 36 caliber read this Dixie review.... complaints the .380 is too large, they had to drive the balls out with a punch. It worked great with .375. I find this to be true on my .36 Colt 2nd generation 1862 police (had to use .375, .380 too large).

I use .454 in my defarbed Walker.

track of the wolf has dozens of sizes round ball, at least 50 sizes. Their .319 is great for Remington 31 caliber pocket.

So I use .454 with my Remington.44, they don’t shave a lot of lead off but seem to work just fine. On the walker I was told you want the .457 for the higher pressures of the extra powder behind it. Not sure if this is true or not. Maybe I will try both ball sizes in both guns and let you guys know if there is any difference

Uberti 44 cylinder mouths run around .449 or there abouts and the .451 would be marginal. Pietta 44 cylinder mouths average around .446 and would be a better fit for the .451 ball.
