.44 AutoMag vs Hog

240 gr. 44 caliber bullet going "only" 1,300 fps

Not sure the word "only" is being used appropriately.
It's possible to push a 240 gr JHP to 1450 fps in a .44 AutoMag, but that's a max pressure load. There was a time - 40 years ago - when I used to do things like that. No more.

High-pressure loads break parts, and with the AutoMag broken parts are a catastrophe. It’s not that spare parts are expensive or hard to find, it’s that they aren’t available anywhere at any price. The companies that made the gun have been out of the AutoMag business for decades. Any parts that were available have been bought and quite possibly broken. The two parts that usually break are the bottom rear lug on the bolt and the bolt rotation pin. I have one spare pin. If I want a bolt, I have to buy another AutoMag.

So, I worked up a load that was powerful enough to work the action and when I found one, I stopped right there. Luckily, the load is super-accurate.

This isn’t a gun I take to the range and shoot just for fun. I wish I could. Unlike a .44 Mag revolver, you can shoot the AutoMag all day in comfort.

Sounds like a grand time was had by all. My hog-killin' machine is a BFR 45/70 with 400 grain jacketed soft-points above 1300 FPS, usually used at Caryonah Hunting Lodge in Crossville, Tennessee (www.caryonah.com).

Headed there next month with my 19-year-old daughter! It will be her first trip as a hunter rather than as a spectator.

Since I am not a particularly talented chef, I take the meat to a local BBQ restaurant that is experienced with cooking wild game. Good stuff. And your small pig, so much the better!
