44 Mag Loads 296,110,2400,4227

I just loaded my last 100 rounds of 44 mag. Using 2400 gave me pretty good grouping in my Model 29 with Hard Cast 240 gr. SWC. Now I am thinking about trying some other powders using the same 240 gr. SWC. I was hoping to get some feedback on N110, 296, 4227, or 2400 loads before I purchase eight lbs of powder. Speer recommends LPMP for the 296 and N 110. I have plenty of LPMP in stock and seems to be easier to acquire then LP, which I also have plenty of in stock. These loads will be for plinking and not hunting. Also, I was hoping to use the same powder for the model 27 and 28 in which 2400 gave good groups as well.

My favorite 44 magnum powder is 2400. It's tough to beat. I like the consistency of 4227, but for me it always grouped (tightly) high and left. This wouldn't normally be a problem if I only shot this one load out of my SBH, but I like the diversity of the 44 mag platform. If all my other loads group on the bull and 4227 groups off center, it doesn't provide me the versatility I'm wanting so I stick with 2400.

You will have to try all the powders for yourself because as you know, all revolvers are different and will shoot well with one powder or another. W296/H110, 2400, 4227, #9, Enforcer, Lil'Gun and probably a few I missed will all do a good job in the .44 Magnum. Hey, half the fun is finding the right powder, no??

Me personly I stick with what works why fix something if its not broken
Im using 2400 with great results in my SBH and win M94 my contender is another mater
Im still looking for the right combanation so im still having fun..

44 mag + cast bullet + 2400 = Perfection.

I've loaded a lot of 44 magnum, with all the powders you mentioned, and slugs weighing from 180- 355.

My favorite? A 245-255 SWC over 2400.

With jacketed bullets? I'll use 296/H110 or Vit N110 quite a bit.

Couple things I've burned powder to figure out-

You will go faster with 296/H110 than 2400 in max loadings.

If you want a squeaky clean burning jacketed bullet load? Vit N110. The only drawback is this powder can be a bit spendy.

Also, make sure to get a pound of universal or unique for loading plinkers eventually.

You can get a tad more fps from other powders, but from my experience and others during the last 50 years you can't beat 2400 for 44 Mag accuracy, plus you can download it a little with good results.

Also, my favorite for top end loads is AA4100 powder.

With jacketed it is hard to beat AA #9 or N-110. Both are very clean, especially the N-110, are very accurate, and don't need a mag primer.

2400 is my favorite for hot loads in .44 and .357 mag. Unique for milder loads. If you've got nice groups with what you've already tried, why mess around? Of course, there is no harm in experimenting for fun!!

For cast bullets and magnum loads I always liked 2400. For jacketed bullets I use 296 and H110 mostly. An old lot of AA #9 too. VV N 110 has provided extreme accuracy in my 629 44 mag and TC 357.

These loads will be for plinking and not hunting.

For plinking where great power is not needed you might try some Unique with the cast bullets. Less powder than the magnum powders , less blast and very pleasant loads to shoot for extended shooting sessions.

If you're wanting non full snort plinkers, try around 7.5 grains of unique under that 245 SWC. Mild and accurate in every gun I've tried it in.

If you want full snort for plinking, my reccomendation of 2400 stands.

Another longtime shooter and reloader here. +1 to what the others said. 2400 is my absolute favorite powder for .44 Magnum loads. It's good for .357 as well.

WLE- Absolutely. Always magnum primers with H110/296.

Starter, I too love that smell. But the next time someone lights off something charged with 296 give it a whiff. To me it smells quite a bit like ginger.

I have in the past , but once when when none were available except for the Winchester WLP , I tried them and have used them almost exclusively since then. The 44 Mag accuracy has been impressive with reloads using the WLP. Hornady lists Winchester WLP as the primer used in their 44 Mag data. The majority of 44 jacketed bullets I use is Hornady.
