I know there has to be a bunch of you guys out there that deer hunt with a revolver in .44 Mag and factory ammo.

A buddy asked if I knew of a reliable factory load that he could take deer with, and not being a handgun hunter had me at bay with the question . So I thought I would run it buy you guys, and see what info. was out there.

He shoots a Redhawk with a six inch or longer barrel, and iron sights.

How about some favorite factory fodder info for him?

mucho thanks:D dagger dog

Any 240 grain JHP or SP load from any of the major manufactures should do just fine.

I'd pick the one that he can afford to practice with before it's time to go hunting.

Deer ain't that hard to kill if you can put any .44 Mag bullet in the heart/lung area every time.

I've used Hornady 180gr. and 200gr. HPs, Federal 180gr. HPs, and Winchester 210gr. Silvertip HPs - all with good results.

I seem to recall using a 200gr. JSP with good results too but I can't recall the maker. Would guess it was Hornady but really don't know.

I wouldn't hesitate to use any 240 gr. JHP or JSP factory loaded ammo as long as my gun shot it accurately. 240 gr is strictly my personal opinion. As other have said, any properly placed .44 mag bullet will do the job.

The wallyworld here in town has Winchester WB 240grn. JSPs @ $32 for a box of 50. Altho I have never used them for hunting, they shoot almost as accurate as my reloads. I agree with RC....

I prefer the lighter bullets for deer and have used the 180gr. Sierra JHP handloads because I wanted the velocity and expansion. Most often, the 240's punch through without expanding much unless you whack a shoulder bone. I took my first handgun buck with the 180gr. It passed through, but devastated the lungs with the quick expansion. It ran 25 yds or so.
Regardless of the bullet used, the 44 Remag packs the punch to do the job as long as you do yours.

+1's to the "less than 240gr club" all work good for deer. I've got some flat tip 280gr Cor Bons that make a great bear load!

I've had good success with the Win USA 240 SJSP mentioned up thread. Good accuracy and consistent velocity in my 1894. Took a mulie and a 200 lb. pig with 'em before I started handloading.

Deer are not bulletproof.

I've cleanly taken deer with a .357, so any full power .44 magnum bullet from 180 up to 300 will work just fine with good shot placement.

If I had to pick a factory load, I'd go with a 240 JHP from Winchester, Remington, or Federal.
