Hello everybody, i have a question. I was handed a box of mixed ammo from a good friend for my 45 long colt. In the mix is a 44 smith and wesson special. Can that be fired out of a 45 long colt? They both have the samw chamber pressure
 
NO!!!!

I hope that makes it clear. You'll have a ruptured case, and possible a blown cylinder.
 
It won't blow a cylinder.

A .427" bullet in a .452" bore would make for some interesting pressure loss though.

At most, you would have a seriously swollen case and a bullet dribbling down range going end over end sideways.

There is a good Reason one is called a .44 Special and the other is called a .45 Colt.

BTW: They do not have the same pressure.
.44 Spl is 15,500 and the .45 Colt is 14,000

The correct answer is to buy a .44 Special. Seriously, you'll like it. All I had was empty .44 Spl brass when I bought my first .44 Spl. Heck, your one step ahead of me. Yours is loaded already.
 
A friend got in a rush at a Cowboy shoot and loaded a .44-40 in his .45 revolver. Bloop.

Another time, he loaded a .45 Colt in his .44-40 rifle. That was a monumental jam. There was a real Texas Ranger who had that problem and said that unscrewing the sideplate of his Winchester with his Bowie knife to clear the jam while under Indian attack made him a believer in rifle and sixgun of the same caliber.
 
I don't recommend it, because you really risk the potential of a brass split at the case head, which would be very bad and I don't know the out come.

However, I shot a 44 Spl over the chronograph screens with one round, and one round only, just to see the velocity.


44 Special round fired in M25-7 45 LC, 5" barrel.
250 LSWC 7.3 grs Unique WLP (nickle) primer

620 fps

same round averaged 930 fps in 6.5' M24


Now that you know what will happen, do not repeat my stupid stunt. :eek:
 
Only shoot the ammunition that the firearm was designed for... as a responsible gun owner please practice firearm safety. If you still have questions, contact the manufacturer of your firearm, whom will likely tell you "under no circumstances should a .44 be fired in a .45".

I got over 30 but only have two revolvers. A m1895 nagant and smith and wesson from 1877. The 45 colt ammo is for a lightning. The boxes that were given to me had 44 special in a 45 box and 45 colt in a 44 mag box. I know in revolvers you and shoot sister rounds in the same revolver. 38 special in 357, and i know of some 32 that are interchangable. I just wanted to make sure. I already got rid of the 44 rounds. A friens said his black hawk will shoot 44 special and magnum. Its always a good thing to double check what you are loading
 
Your friends gun will also shoot 44 russian. The key is that they are all three 44 calibers. However a 44 is not a 45.
 
Obviously every gun should be fired with ONLY the proper ammo.

This can be slightly confusing at times, with the 38 Special ammo being safe in a 357 Magnum revolver and a 44 Special ammo being perfectly fine in a 44 Magnum gun.

Ask someone if unsure.

well, you have 30 guns but only 2 revolvers... It sounds like it's time for 31 guns with 3 revolvers! :p (sounds like a plan to me)

Please don't use those .44s in your .45. It won't work out happly for you if you do.

But look on the bright side. Now tell your wife you need to buy a .44 cause you have all these .44 bullets!
