I've got nearly 1/2 pound of some old Alcan #5 powder that I got from my Dad... the can that it is in is marked "November 1973"... old stuff.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any old manuals that show any data for 44Special with 200gr RNFP cast and Alcan #5?

I set up the chrony and worked up a load with it yesterday, and I'm just wondering how close I am compared to published data.

If anyone has any old Alcan #5 data, I'd appreciate seeing it, Thanks!!

Speer Reloading Manual Number 8 (copyright 1970) gives the following data for 44 Special using 215-gr cast lead SWC with gas check:
AL-5
10.0gr mv=880
11.0gr mv=965
and for comparison
AL-7
11.0gr mv=1022
12.0gr mv=1082
Unique
6.0gr mv=787
8.0gr mv=1017

Holy cow!! I got it pretty close. Using Hornady brass, Suter's choice 200gr RNFP hardcast bullets, no gas check.

I read several places where AL#5 was comparable to Unique, so I dropped one grain below the Unique start charge in Lyman#47... 6 grains. A whopping 347 fps out of my CA Bulldog.

Started going up in 1 grain increments until things started to happen, around 9.0 grains. I then started going in .5 grain increments... figured 800-850fps would be a good place to stop, unless I started getting pressure signs elsewhere.

Got up to 11.0 grains, 830fps, decided to stop there. Reached my velocity, and the brass still fell out of the cylinder. Looks to be good to go!

Thanks for looking up the old data, I really appreciate it!!
