.44 Special Reloads

I was in the same predicament as you were.

My .44 magnum pistol were beaten the crap out of me to a point where it wasn't pleasant to shoot anymore. Yeah yeah, everyone has there biggest and baddest caliber on the line moment. this is especailly true when you are young.

As you get older, that mentality goes out the window. I've enjoyed a lot more shooting softer recoil guns.

Anyhoot, I've been shooting 44 mag more lately due to reduce load. best of all, you don't even need special 44 special brass.

here's some receipe you can try, it's pushing the 240 bullet near the 900 ft per sec. that's almost 45 acp territory. Very pleasant. the only one that I tried so far is red dot. it works very pleasant however, a lil on the smokey side. most of these are all shotgun powder you may have hanging around.

bullet: 240 gr swc
OAL = 1.605
Bullseye = 6.5 gr yield 894 FPS
red dot = 6.5 gr yield 905 FPS
green dot = 7 gr 901 FPS
unique = 7 gr 899 FPS

Give it a try!

I would have to agree with the users of .44 mag. cases loaded with either of the powders you have using the ".44 mag. starting loads" in any of the various loading manuals. Availability of the mag. brass and the thought of using it also for full throttle loads along with less cleaning gets my vote. Good shooting!

I recognize you received a lot of replies but one thing to consider. I load 185 gr DBBWC over trailboss as a target load. The nice thing is it has the same POI as a 240 gr full bull mag load at 25 yards (at least in my pistol). I find that to be a pretty handy situation. I don't have to change my sights when I go from target practice to hunting / self defense.

I also, have used 20/28 using Unique mid-range data with good success. Another member of this forum first mentioned this about a year ago. I tried it and got the same result that he did. Velocities about 3% faster than Unique. I used mid-range data and saw no signs of over pressure or any other negative signs.

I agree with bmwguy. You can develop a good target load using 700X or whatever and the recoil will not beat you to death. Good Luck. Hank

I recently tried a slight variation of blarby's w231 and 180 lwc loads in my 44 mag. Wonderful! Same load, but I used 160 lwc instead, . I got 1 5/8 group at 25 yards in my 629. Great load, mild recoil, mild report, accurate , fun to shoot!
