All,

Tonight I shot my Lew Horton 24-3. I usually shoot cowboy loads through it, likie magtech orultramax...240gr lrn bullets. Very accurate stuff and nice to shoot.

I tried a couple of Corbon 44 Spl 165gr JHP ,vel1150fps,energy 485 ft/lbs.

This stuff was loud and had quite the muzzle flash! My 24-3 sounded like a magnum or a howitzer.

What I was wondering was will this ammo beat up my gun? The ammo is not labeled +P...but it sure feels like it.

Also, my experince has been that Corbon is not very accurate. I also shot Powerball through my Wilson CQB and it was loud and all but not accurate stuff. Anybody have the same experience with this ammo?

I'm sure for close in shooting it will do the job?

Thanks,
RIckman:confused:

That 24 will handle those loads with no problems, even with long term use.

I personally prefer the 200gr Gold Dots in 44 Special.
The hollowpoint is big enough to make Frosted Flakes in. :D

i like the 200gr gold dots (blazer) in my 696 too. the blast and flash didn't seem any worst than my .38spl...maybe it was obscured by the mag-na-port vents :p

Thanks guys.

I find myself becoming attracted to .44 Specials. Just something about those big holes in the cylinder on each side of a howitzer barrel.

Yeeaahh, baby!! You said it.

Those are the Blazers with the 200 gr Gold Dots inside.

Revolvers capable of handling the .44 Mag are usually much heavier and stout to handle the pressure. .44 spl is more than adequate for SD loads. Some feel that the .44 mag is too much for SD since it is moving so fast along with the excess flash, noise and recoil.

My 44 has a few age spots , but she's still sweeet ! Mfg about 1930 .
I like the CCI 200 gr as well .

All things considered (recoil, muzzle blast, controllability, weight, size, etc.) I think a .44 Special is a better self defense weapon than a .44 Magnum.

guy - your piece is a classic!

pappy - that photo reminds me of looking down a 16 inch bbl on the USS MISSOURI.

200 gr SafeStops. They're a wadcutter with large cleave that jacknifes the bullet open when it hits bone. Penetrates a foot or better in ballistic gelatin. Patented design by Jim Cirillo, sold by Village Metalworks.

I carry these in my 296, but may switch to CorBon DPX when they're available in .44 Sp.

That corbon 165 rated at 1150 does 1200 from my 4" Smiths. The magnum version is 100 fps faster. This particular load does over 1500 from my 8 3/8" 29 and cut a 1" five shot group at 25 yards.

The Corbons are always at least adequately accurate though not always the most accurate load in a given caliber. I find that the 165 44 special and magnum are as accurate as any load in my .44 magnums. Also found excellent accuracy with several of the corbon .357 loads.
