If the 444 Marlin is an enlongated 44 magnum, wouldn't it be possible to shoot 44 mag in a 444 chambered rifle?

I suppose a 444 lever wouldn't do well with 44 mag length cartridges, but would a single shot rifle work? (like a NEF handi-rifle)

Is there a difference in the chambering besides length of brass and throat depth?

The .444 Marlin is based on the .44 Mag rim size, but the two cases are actually not the same.

The .44 Mag is a straight case with an O.D. of .4565"

The .444 is slightly tapered, with a O.D. of .469" right in front of the rim, and a mouth of .453".
(.016" taper)

The .44 Mag case is .877" shorter, so the bullet would have to jump the nealy 1" gap before hitting the rifling leade.

Accuracy is sure to suffer, and chamber fouling with jacket copper very likely at the foreward edge.

With that said, I suppose it would be possible to safely shoot .44 Mag in a .444 if you had too.
Just not a very good idea.
