OK, can anyone tell me if it would be feasible to create some sort of 44-45 caliber wildcat based on the 06 parent case to work in your garden variety military 98 mauser action? I'm aware this is done routinely with the Siamese Mauser and the 45-70, but I'm thinking of something a little different. Perhaps a vz-24 with an entirely straight-walled, blown-out 06(or57mm)case? What would a fellow be up against? I don't care for the belted magnums,(specifically, don't care for the belt) but I would like a big bore bolt action built from the 98, would like to avoid opening up the bolt face, etc.OK, let's review:

.460 bolt face (06-8x57 etc.)

98 military action

.429 or .458 barrel

45/06 cartridge or 44/06

Can it be done?

I see you have been thinking. That is good...

A 45 ought six is interesting but not feasible as far as I know. There would be nothing for the case to headspace on- it would just get hammered into the barrel when the firing pin hits the primer...

You show do a search on the web for the .400 Whelen and the .411 Hawk- basically the biggest you can go on the much loved '06 case without running into trouble.

The .35 Whelen is a sizable chunk of lead- still medium bore though- easily put together without too much modification to the action...

If you do decide to open up the action and do the rails and the necessary tweaking for feeding, the .404 Jeffery is a real hoot...

A friend of mine has a .45ACP Mauser. No magazine work, just a single shot centerfire plinker, but, as DD says, it works. As does .45 Win Mag, .44 Auto Mag, probably others.

I would want to start with .30-06 basic cylindrical brass so as to not draw the mouth too thin.

Desert Dog is correct, you don't have enough case there to get case support from a shoulder, so you would need to go with case mouth support. That gets a bit tricky with rifle pressures since the throat has to be large enough to allow case mouth expansion while not being too big because it provides case mouth support. I think keeping the tolerances right on ammo and chambering would be a neat trick.

The .400 Whelen and the .411 Hawk are shoulder supported and are claimed to work, but even their fans say that headspace is hard to maintain and that misfires are common as the cases do not have adequate support from the tiny shoulders. It has been stated that .375 is the largest caliber than can be used with the .30-'06 case, and I would agree. In fact, I consider the .35 Whelen on the edge of proper support.

Maybe I am wrong, but I can't think of a case mouth supported rifle round bigger than the .30 carbine. There is a reason.

They both have .452 Shilen barrel blanks.

They are both meant to shoot 452 230 gr Montana Gold FMJ bullets.
