I am interested in starting to reload for my range ammo for 45acp. I was also interested in getting in the future a 47-70 1895 for general use and utility when I get back to TX. Currently live in IN where centerfire rifle is banned for hunting seasons and only allowed in population controll hunts or varmint.
I don't plan on smoking squirrels in these city limits besides that would leave nothing behind for the dumplins. But also don't want to spend into the plastic for ammo.
Have looked into Dillon and Lee websites and so far it looks dismal. So far as I can tell it looks like the commercial grade eq is the only eq with parts designed for the 45-70.
Would members here know the part #s for the right dies to fit this cal. Dillon and Lee or any other brands on todays market?
For some of these less common calibers would THRers with the experience and eq share time and smarts with some of the beginers? Maybe onsite use rental with instruction.

I use lee dies for my 45-70. RCBS, Redding and Hornady all make dies for that caliber. I load 405 Rem( bulk from midway) and a case full of Varget for plinking / RE#7 for my hunting loads. The plinking loads are moving 1500 fps and the hunting loads are 1700fps. The rifle is a Marlin guide gun. I can wack a 10" steel plate at 200yds w/ open sights or with a scope. You can load them as lite or as heavy as you want. The range in speed is 1000fps to around 2000 fps. It depends on how much you can handle.
The "cowboy " loads that were used in the late 1800's (1200fps)took out most of the Bison out west so it dosent have to be going that fast to kill big animals.
Any other questions?

I must be foggy this morning...what does 'eq'mean?I''m sure I'll be sorry I asked,lol
All the die makers make dies for this cart.,,and the loads are endless...plinkers to elk whompers.
From what I read the ported Marlins are noisy and throw flamne a foot high, and most shooters don't like 'em.Just what I've heard.
I love that cart.,especially in a Contender pistolwhooeee.Ssure rings a steel plate!
for economy,I shoot lead bullets, but the Marlin micro-groove rifleing can be finicky about shooting lead. Not sure if the '95's are micro or not.
Hope I've helped ya some.

I haven't reloaded for 45-70 yet. To many reasonable factory loads.

AS to the Marlin...I bought an 1895 with 22" barrel. I prefered the balance of the 22" and I absolutely love this gun.

eq = equipment

Looking into the different versions I belive the 1895g no longer ships from Marlin ported or with the microgroove barrel. I am thinking of getting one fit with 2 or 3 port compensator to use on the range. That way I can pull it off if needed.
I am guessing Lee and Dillon may just not be listing where I was looking for the 45-70 dies.

doh!!!
You might want to shoot it with and without the comp at the range to see if the poa changes much.
What is your reloading experiencef? ie: you MUST lube the brass for resizing,or your die will grab it and NOT give it back.:(
Iuse Varget powder because it meters well in my Dillon, and I don't need the oomph of other powders...at leas my shoulder doen't.

I shoot the Govt cartridge in BP and Smokeless. M prefered load for my Siamese Mauser is 52gr/IMR3031 with bulk Rem.405gr JSP. Gives about 2000fps from a 26"bbl. Work up to it as this is 2gr below max! Has been a 1 shot stopper on Hogs!!
