I have a Custer era Springfield trapdoor that I am refinishing. I picked up some 45-70 brass and noticed that it has a slight taper to it and does not fit the chamber on the gun. Is there differences in 45-70 brass? My only thought is that the newer brass may be made slightly larger in order to prevent stupid people from loading a modern load in an old gun like what I have.

No, to my knowledge, 45-70 has always been 45-70.

All 45-70 brass is supposed to be tapered from .504" at the head down to .480" at the mouth, if it is in Max spec.

There is no intent by modern brass manufactures to prevent new brass from fitting old guns.

What you need to do is run it through your FL sizing die and then reload it.
