Hi everyone. I keep my brass, and see on here when I have enough of a stockpile built up.

That time is approaching, but I have a few concerns. Until now, I've only ever sold pistol brass, and the brass is always perfectly round (that is, at the open end) after firing.

However, I am noticing that a lot of my 45-70 brass is not perfectly round, but is slightly flattened or misshapen after firing. The whole case isn't flat, just the open end) Is this common? Can this brass be sold and safely reloaded, or is it just scrap now?

Thanks everyone,

L

The sizing die will reshape the case mouth. Unless the brass is severely damaged, like being stepped on, it can be safely sized and loaded.

I'm assuming this brass was fired from a lever action rifle, and the case mouths were dinged from hitting the ground or concrete. If so, this is pretty normal. As long as the integrity of the brass is intact, it will reload just fine.

Hope this helps.

Ah, I see. Awesome! And you assume correctly! I love my Browning 1886. Thanks for your help!

guitarguy314,
No, no, don't listen to him, the brass is no good. Just send it to me and I'll safely dispose of it for you. I'll even pay the shipping if that will help you! :p

Sorry, I just had to... Like already said, that brass is just fine. I recently bought a Marlin 1895 too and it's a great rifle. You should start reloading instead of selling off your brass.

Reloader Fred: Awesome! I really like the looks of the 1895, but none were available when I was looking for a rifle, then a nice mancame along with a Browning 1886 and I couldn't say no. haha. Nothin like a good .45-70 lever gun.

ArchAngelCD: Haha. No good eh? Ah well. Thanks for the offer. I don't want to trouble you with 'em. I'll go find a grinder I guess. XD. Though, I have thought about making them into keychains and selling them at gun shows...)

I know, I know. I need to, but I don't have the space or the money right now. It's on my list though. Maybe a "getting into grad school present" next year...hmm...

Thanks everyone!

P.S. All jokes aside, I'll be putting up a sales thread later on today or tomorrow, so if you're interested, keep an eye out.

I actually just bought some off of Gunbroker or else I would have looked up your sale! I recently sold off a bunch of my milsurps and bought some things more in my interest, one of which was an Winchester 1886 Extralight. It's hard to not love that 1886 design and action. Good luck with the sale!

Brass will be fine HOWEVER if it is Hornady Leverevalution let people know that prior to selling!...... It is shorter than normal 45-70 brass.......

ArchAngel- I'd love your load recipes. I'm considering that very beauty to add to my wall for the spring.

Helps that they are FANTASTIC with cast bullets.

Given the price of factory 45-70, I would have a hard not justifying that expense.
