I was shopping online and for cast bullets for reloading my 45-70 and noticed a lot of companies like Oregon Trail list their bullets as .459" instead of .458". They say it's for the 45-70, but I thought bullets were supposed to be .458".
I would greatly appreciate it if somebody could enlighten me.

Lead bullets are just like that. Depending on the exact mixture of the alloy used, the bullets exact diameter as well as weight will vary. You will probably be allright using them. I had bought some lead 44's a while back that were tagged 430 and didn't learn until after the fact that they were indeed .431. They shot real well.

I suppose if all the stars were aligned against you, tight bore, big bullets, too warm and all that you may have a potential there to get into trouble. Slug your bore and size cast bullets .001 larger is what I've always been told to be on the safe side. Work em up slow and take good notes.

The .458 bullets will be the jacketed ones.
