45-70 loads,did I mess up?

I have a marlin 1895G "guide Gun" I have an old manual scale and went to zero it out and reset it the other day. I then loaded about 30 rounds and realized that I may have used to much powder. My books didn't have a recipe for 405 Grain Lead bullets with 3031. So I used a load off the internet. on here I think. Well to make a long story shorter, I loaded 45 grains in these loads. Now I don't know if that is safe or not. Can someone help me out here?
 
I checked two sources for #3031 with a 405-grain bullet. One lists 51.5 grains and the other 53.0 grains. Both warn that the load shouldn't be used in trap-door Springfields or other black powder rifles.

However you'd better pull one or more of those cartridges you made and be sure they are indeed loaded with 45 grains and not something else.
 
Thanks, I know they are 45 grains. I had been loading 40 grains, and just set the scale wrong. learned my lesson. Thanks.
 
When you pull the trigger on those 405 grainers in that guide gun, I don't think you will have any doubt whether it went off or not!!!!!

Ed, I'd like to shoot a gg. I have a Ruger #1 in 45-70. The 'good' loads for the 405'ers let you know about them when they go off in it too! BUT-they deliver on the other end too.

Is your gg ported? (All gg's may be for all I know.)
 
You'll run out of room in a 45-70 case before 3031 will reach dangerous pressures. I'm talking win1886, marlin 1895 and ruger #1 rifles here.
 
I use 45gns of IMR 3031 behind a 440gn LBT in my Guidegun and things work great. It lets you know the rifle went off, but still a very safe load and actually tame on the pressure. S/F...Ken M
 
46.0 grains of IMR 3031 under a rem. 405 jfn. in my handi rifle. very tolerable recoil and 8 grains under max. you are quite safe ed

sam..the load i use & gave is very accurate in my rifle. for practice sessions simulating ranges & shooting positions i have while deer hunting, i shoot at 50 yards off my knees and also offhand, no rest at all. if i do my part, groups stay under 3 inches. i'm certain groups would shrink shot off a bench with sandbags.
 
When I started to reload for my (then) new guide gun I had a bunch of 4895 around, so I worked up loads for that. It may be "too" slow for this caliber, but you really can not get too much into the case, and it will set you back as much as you can bear...1650 fps with 300 gr lead, and about 1500 fps with 405 gr lead. You can get the thing to shoot nearly as fast as a 450 Marlin, but why? that said, 3031 should technically be a better powder, IMHO
I sure am happy that they got away from the micro-groove barrel on the guide gun, I can now shoot lead!
 
I went as high as 50.0gr of RL-7 in my 1895 with a 300gr HP and I believe 44gr under a 405gr Cast HP. Accuracy had fallen off, and found that my prefered load was the 405gr with enough BlueDot to get it to around 1,550fps and excellent accuracy from Micro-groove barrel.

Key to accuracy with cast bullets from M-G barrel is to size bullets to larger than nominal size. I sized to .460 for .45/70, and .311 for Glenfield 30AS in .30/30wcf.
Accuracy is/was on par with jacketed bullets at .458 and .308 respectively.

GooseGestapo... several other folks have recently mentioned the possibility of shooting lead bullets well in the micro-groove barrel. I have not slugged my barrel, but the lead bullets that I have been obtaining are running about .460. I know that all of the lead bullets that I shoot are commercially cast products, as I no longer desire to do it myself, and are hard. That said, the MG Marlin will not shoot them well, while the Ballard cut barrel on the guide gun loves anything that goes down it. Bye the way, what the heck is ballard cut mean, just another 5th ave. name meaning "standard", or is there really a difference between in and the same stuff we have been using forever?
 
GooseGestapo, tried the link on your latest post, and it came back as not being able to find the host, or something like that. Is this a righteous address, or did I miss something?
