does anyone have a suggestion for a good scope for a Marlin 1895GS .45-70? I would really like to have something that will allow me to get a good sight picture at 75- 100 yards.

The game will be mostly north american big game. I really dont want to spend over 500. And i want to use the marlin xs scope mount system, meaning i need a scope with a long eye relife

I put a Burris 1.75-5x32mm with Signature Safari scope on my Beowulf. The scope has a 4" eye relief. The scope ran $465 for the LRS mod, they are about $70 cheaper with out the lighted reticle. I have been very pleased with it so far.

Why do you need a scope at 75-100 yards?

I shot a jackrabbit with an 1874 Sharps at that range with irons, in the dark in Montana. And the irons on those old guns are not nearly as nice as Marlin's current sights. The bitch was getting the bullet drop right due to the round's trajectory, but the windage was no problem. It's not meant as a varmint cartridge...:)

Also dropped a buffalo in one shot at about 80 yards with the same irons (the real reason I was there). Hit right where I meant to hit it.

Personally, I'd see a scope as a liability, not an asset, on a Guide Gun.

+1 on what hamourkiller said...

Got a Leupold 1.5x5 VXIII on my 1895 and love it. Plenty of eye relief even with mega loads, quick target acquisition and great optics. Way, way under your $500 target and easy to sell if you need to in the future.

I put the Leupold FX-II Scout Scope on mine. A little different approach but I like that forward mounting very much.

These are around $250 for the optic, not sure how much the XS mount and sights are.
I decided not to use the sights after looking at one that had them. The fixed 2.5x optic works well for me.

i have a fixed 4x Nikon ProStaff on mine, works like a charm. i sometimes wish i would have went with a guide/pistol scope with more eye relief (45/70 gives a good scope-kiss when you get lax) but other than those 2 incidents i cannot complain, she holds well.

I have a Ruger #1 in 45-70 (aka 'thumper') upon which I mounted a 4X burris compact scope. It works really well for that application as far as I am concerned.

I have made some quick shots on deer and hogs that turned out well. It quickly defines point of aim, is small and handy, very clear and mounted so there is no chance of 'scope eye'.

Doncha love the way that old 45-70 round puts game down and out!

meaning i need a scope with a long eye relief

That *greatly* narrows it down:

-Burris Short Mag series (look at the 2-7x32 I think it is)
-Burris Scout Scope, fixed 2.75
-Leupold M8 Scout Scope, fixed 2.5
-Dot sight like an Aimpoint
-Fixed 1x scopes (no magnification)
-Trijicon Accupoint 1.25-4x24mm would probably have enough eye relief

i have the same gun, and probbaly the same kind of eyes (beginnings of cataracs, astigmatisim, typical 50 + year old focus problems)! i put a 4-12 simmons on mine. a 3-9 would have been fine, but i found a deal, you know how that goes. i mounted it low, because, to me, the open sights are useless. i leave it in 4 power, except for longer distance or if i have time, i use it to make certain of the animal and whether or not it has horns. i.m.o. for us with not so good eyes, anything less tha 3 power is like looking through a straight peice of glass. so, to all you youngsters with good eyes, ENJOY THEM WHILE YOU GOT 'EM! for the rest of us, buy scopes with more power!
