I have a 45-70 that has a hammer that stays up a bit high and creates some interference when moving the bolt back. This causes the lever movement to be difficult and not smooth. Do I need to order a new hammer or just grind down the top of the hammer down a bit?

Any particular brand of 45-70 you ask about??

Without knowing, I would have to say Step Away From The Grinder though!!!

There is no good to come of grinding on a hammer that in all likelihood, worked perfectly in the first place.

Without finding out what the real problem causing the problem is, in the second place!!
