45 ACP 200 gr RNFP loading data

Hi all, I'm new here and excited about being a member. Just a quick question: wanting to handload some RNFP's (200 gr) for my new Wilson Supergrade 1911. I have loaded (per Wilson) 200 gr SWC with VV N320, 5.0 gr's, and OAL of 1.250., and crimped at .469. I'm just getting back into reloading after 25 years away so I guess I should say that I'm new. Using the Lyman 49th addition which does not cover the RNFP. Maybe there is a general rule for "like" bullets so you don't need to own evey manufacturers data book?

I shoot a lot of that bullet in my 1911's, and it's a great bullet. I seat mine to 1.205" and load them with Bullseye.

The SWC and RNFP are not the same bullet so I am confused as to what bullet you have?

The SWC are a bit trickier to get the OAL right so they feed correctly

I'm sorry, Doug, but I don't post data on open forums, since it so easy to forget, transpose, commit typos, etc. I also don't trust data from faceless strangers who post on the internet under an alias. That's just me, but I've seen some dangerous data posted in the past.

I use the same 5.0gr of VV N320 with lead 200gr RNFP for my Dan Wesson. It's a nice easy shooting, accurate round.

I shoot the MBC Cowboy #4, 200gn RNFP, 12BN, almost exclusively in my Colt Rail Gun. I have never had a failure to feed nor any leading. Extremely accurate for me. Nice pleasant round to shoot with HP38 and an OAL of 1.195. Check other sources, but 5 to 5.5gn of HP38 will shoot nice in about any caliber I load.

+1. I seat Missouri 200 gr RNFP (IDP #4-XD -18 BHN) right to the crimp groove (yes, it is a 45 Colt bullet sized for 45ACP .452" and has the crimp groove) and OAL comes out right at 1.195". Here's a comparison picture next to 200 gr SWC (IDP #1 -18 BHN) with .472" taper crimp.

As to powder charge, the blue arrows indicate the portions of the bullet base/bearing surface that get seated inside the case neck. For 200 gr SWC, 5.0 gr of W231/HP-38 has worked well in various pistols I have used but the 200 gr RNFP bullet base will not seat as deep as the 200 gr SWC, and you may need to use more powder charge in the 5.0-5.5 gr range.

Current Hodgdon load data for 200 gr SWC:

200 gr CAST LSWC W231/HP-38 OAL 1.225" Start 4.4 gr (771 fps) 11,000 CUP - Max 5.6 gr (914 fps) 16,900 CUP

How may gr's of bullseye?

For 200 gr SWC bullet, current Alliant load data lists 4.6 gr of Bullseye as max charge and 2004 Alliant load data listed 4.0 gr for target load at 1.190" OAL. If using 1.195" OAL for 200 gr RNFP, since bullet base is seated not as deep as the 200 gr SWC bullet, I would do my powder workup using the 200 gr SWC load data. Since Alliant only lists max powder charge, use 10% reduction as your start charge (so I would use 4.2 gr as start and work up 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 4.6 gr for the powder work up).
