Looking for some specific help with .45 ACP loads in a SIG P220.

I'm using:

SIG P220 Stainless
Barrel length: 4.4"

Case: Starline
Primer: Federal GM150M
Bullet: Hornady 230 gr. TMJ RN
Powder: Bullseye
Trim-to-length: 0.893"
C.O.A.L.: 1.270"
Taper Crimp: 0.470"

Dies: Redding Competition
Press: Forster

Chrono results:

Temp: 66F

5.1 gr. Bullseye: 714 fps average
5.2 gr. Bullseye: 741 fps average
5.3 gr. Bullseye: 758 fps average

All were accurate, no failures to feed/eject, and no pressure signs.

My Sierra reloading manual states a maximum load of 5.2 gr. Bullseye = 900 fps from a 5" barrel.

I was disappointed in the 741 fps I got with 5.2 gr. of Bullseye.

My question is: Has anyone safely pushed a 230 gr. out of a SIG P220 at say 800-825+ fps? Should I just stick with 5.2 gr. max and be happy with the 741 fps velocity?

Thanks...

Chuck

The Speer manual has 45ACP loads that were tested with the SiG P220

You might try Titegroup.

I got an average of 834.8 with 5.6 grains of Titegroup in my 220.

Brass-Win
Primer-Fed 150
Bullet- Precision 230 grain (moly coated lead RNF).

Brass trimmed to .891
OAL- 1.27"
Crimped to .471"

PM me, I can foward you the Hornady data for that bullet... However, you'll probably need a slower powder than Bullseye to get 800fps out of a 4.25" barrel. Hornady 7th has no Bullseye data for that bullet. Oh - and it also recommends a 1.230" COL for that bullet.

Speer 13 lists 5.2gr bullseye as a starting charge (5.7 max) for their 230gr TMJ with a 1.26" COL. However, Speer's bullet is built differently from the one you're using - so take the info with a grain of caution.

The Sierra manual is usually right on but you are not using a Sierra bullet and your primer is probably different than the one used in the manual so you can expect your results to vary. Try using Winchester primers and chrono on a warmer day and your velocities should increase to over 800 fps.

I get an average velocity of 856 fps using 6.2grs of Unique with Remington FMJ's in mixed cases from my Sig 220 and the same results statistically from both Government and Commander Colts.

I have a new .45 acp load that is the best I have ever tried.

Trailboss powder 5.2 grains, 230 LRN, Winchester WLP, any old case.
Very accurate no smoke no leading 800 fps. Trailboss fills the case. I was given this load over the phone by Hodgden technical service, its not published data, the published max for 230 LRN is 4.5 grains.

This load is as accurate as the bullseye standby accuracy load.

This load has given me some ragged one hole 10 shot groups (well one big hole) at 25 yards. I shot an 8 shot 3" group today with this load in my Kimber CCT. It also shoots very well in my P220ST.
