I am usind Win 231 at 5.3 grains with Dardas 200 grain LSWC. Win Primer and once fired brass. OAL 1.25 I am having difficult time finding 231 powder right know and looking for advice in diffrent powders and load receipes. I will also be loading 9mm 115 grain Dardas LSWC with Win Primer and brass and looking for a powder to work with both. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am shooting IDPA and it needs to follow rules. :what:

Bullseye, HP-38 (same thing as W231) Titegroup, 700-X, Clays.

Don't you have a load manual?

If not, this info is available from Alliant and Hodgdon websites.

But if you are shooting cast bullets, you really need to buy the Lyman #49 Manual for all the answers to this question.

It is to my understanding you cannot use a 9mm for IDPA because you can''t meet the power facture, is this true? Anyone know anything about this?
Thanks for input.

I'll add AA #2 as a replacement for W-231 in .45 since you can't find 231. Good stuff.

Like said above, if you can't find W231 buy HP-38 because they are the same exact powders. AA#5 would be fine too since it was developed for use in the .45 Auto. AA#5 will be a bit more snappy than W231 though but it will also work for your 9mm rounds. IMO AA#7 is too slow a powder for the .45 Auto.

AA#5 will be a bit more snappy than W231
I have found W-231 snappier than AA #5, assuming the same velocities. Snappy is relative though. My idea of snappy may be different. :)

All the powders mentioned are great powders for the 45 ACP, but don't forget the old standby, Unique. It's slower than 231 or HP-38 but it's still is a great powder for the 1911 for all loads except bullseye/target loads. :)

I use Unique with 45acp, I go full power and dont try any lite stuff.
My standard is to fill any pistol round I load at least half way with powder to remove the possibility of a 2x charge and small air space seems to help consistancy with most powders.
