Can I use my .45ACP dies to load 45 AUTO RIM? Should I switch to a roll crimp die? If I'm shooting 45acp in a revolver, should I use a roll crimp on it? I'm new to the whole 45 revolver thing, but I thought it would be fun.

Yes, your ACP dies will do AR, you just need the appropriate shell holder. In normal level ACP/AR loads, a taper crimp will work fine but if you experience issues with the bullet backing out, you may have to look into roll crimping.

Revolvers chambered in .45 ACP are indeed great fun. I have a Smith 25-2 that's one of my most favorite, and most accurate, revolvers. I don't care for moon clips, so I reload .45 AR ammo for it.

Your .45 ACP dies will work for .45 AR - you'll need a different shellholder, of course. You could roll crimp your .45 AR reloads, but I use the same LSWC bullets for both my .45 autos and the revolver and they don't have a cannelure so I taper crimp for both and that seems to work out just fine for the revolver.

+1 for all the above. I reload for the M22 S&W and prefer the AR. However, I finally decided to go with a roll crimp. I bought the Roll Crimp die from RCBS and it works great for me

Oh, sure.

+1, you can use your ACP dies with auto rim if you just switch the shell holder.
You can certainly go with a roll crimp if you want to, but you don't have to.

One thing you may have fun with is different cast bullets ranging from wadcutters to heavier bullets made more for .45 Colt - things that might not feed reliably in your autos. I have 5 revolvers in .45, and they're a hoot. I use moon clips most of the time, but I do load Auto Rim from time to time.

Careful, you may have way too much fun playing with .45 revolvers.

Match your crimp to the bullet. If it has a cannelure, then roll crimp it, otherwise taper will do just fine.

I have a Taurus 455 (5 shot 45ACP Tracker) that I load 250gr 45 Colt lead flat nose bullets (from a Lee mould) into 45 ACP cases for. They have a cannelure, so I roll crimp.

I also shoot Berrys 230gr plated round nose from it and I taper crimp those.

Over the last 6 months Brian Peirce (sp ?) wrote a very good article in Handloader magazine about 45 ACP & 45AR in S&W 625s with load data. It stirred up a fair bit of discussion about headspacing in such revolvers as they no longer headspace on the case, but use the moon clip instead. Clearly, not an issue for 45AR. Sorry, but I can't remember which month it was in.

Bullets/projectiles with a cannelure for 45 acp to use a roll crimp I found hard to find? In fact Speer 225 G hollow points ( Speer no 100 4479) were the ony ones I did find. Later did invest in a cannelure machine www.corbins.com/power.htm. It works great but not sure its worth the effort?

I use 45acp dies.

I have been shooting 24 gr H110 Montana Gold 230 gr FMJ 1.4" 45auto rim in an S&W25-2.
The Lee factory crimp works to hold the bullet at that seating with the 44 mag like recoil.

But the 300 gr Cast with 17 gr Lil"Gun 1.555" cannot be held in place with the factory crimp, so I shot it single shot.
