Anyone have any good loads for the 45 Auto Rim. I'm interested in loads for heavier bullets.

I have used 6.0 gr Unique with heavier bullets with god results. You may want to start w/ 5.5gr & you could always search this site for more; I know it's out there..

It would be nice if someone would define "heavier bullets" here before folks go suggesting how much powder to use with them!

Are you talking about 230, 250, or what?

Regardless, you are going to run out of room for powder with anything heavier then 250- 255 grain bullets.

The old 6th. edition of Cartridges of the World lists:
230 @ 805 FPS = factory load.
240 - 7.0 Unique at 850 FPS.
250 - 6.5 Unique at 830 FPS.
240 - 17.0 2400 at 1,040 FPS.
I assume these were all lead bullet loads.

They further say: In addition, any safe load in the .45 ACP can be used in the .45 AR with about the same results.

BUT: These are all over maximum loads in todays loading manuals.
Use at your own risk!

I guess that's my fault. :banghead: I was looking for loads in the 250-255 range. I have two PB bullets dropped from SAECO molds with my alloy gives me 249 and 254 gr. I was looking for accuarte loads this was to save me a little time.

I have only tested loads in my M1917. Because it is a prewar pistol, it needs large diameter bullets to avoid leading. I tried 6.0 grs Unique, and 6.5 grains Unique. In this lightweight pistol I found the recoil excessive, especially with the 6.5 grain load. If my memory is correct, the classic series are also lightweight pistols and the recoil from a 850 fps 250 L bullet may be uncomfortable.

Because I shoot 45 AR loads in this M1917 and a converted MkVI Webley, I now use a load of 255 LSWC and 3.5 grains Bullseye. This is a very mild load, barely above pop gun level, but it shoots well, and does not stretch the top strap of the Webley.
