Gents,

I know in a 44 and 357 lever action one can use 44 and 38 special ammo. Is there a magnum caliber 45 lever gun for which 45 Colt would be a useable short round? One in 454 perhaps? Pardon my ignorance on this subject as I am mainly into semi-autos. I was admiring a friends 45-70 lever gun, though, and wondered if anything in 45 was multi-caliber to allow for cheaper plinking.

Just got one..

Puma in .454. Very light and handy. Haven't shot it yet. Got it so I could use 45 Colt loads.

Be advised that, unless you handload, 454's run maybe $1 each.

I haven't sat down and played with the ballistics, but I have a handload using .45 Colt brass and a 300 gr bullet that is a laser beam to 200 yards... Just about as far as I can see reliably...

Upgrade the sights. The factory ones are garbage.

What is your equivalent load for the 300 gr 45 C? I've been shooting some 250 gr Speer HP on top of 22 gr 2400. Those are pretty crisp out of both the Blackhawk and the Rossi.

I'm intrigued by heavy hard cast lead loads like 300 or 335 gr. What's yours run at?

New Starline .45 Colt brass, CCI magnum primer, Cast Performance 300 gr. LFNGC.

Let us just say it is greater than 20 grains of H110 (I use WC820, mil-spec equivalent) Work up in .3 to .5 grain increments from there... Watch for primer flattening...

This gives between 1700 and 1900 FPS in my Puma at the max load...

Oh and it is QUITE crisp let me tell you...

PLEASE BE CAREFUL This is a safe load in my gun, it might not be in yours!!!! :what:
