Does anyone have reload data for a hornady 45 long colt 230 gr fmj .451 using Unique,Blue Dot,imr 800-x or Hogdon HS-6.
Would really use the info. I can only find data for Hollow Points.
Thanks

Using .451 diameter .45 ACP bullets in .45 Colt isn't the best way to go, especially if you are inexperienced.

That said, you could use the 230 Gr HP data if it is for .45 Colt.

You would need to make sure you have adequate neck tension and use a taper crimp.

But the best thing to do would be to buy some 250/255 Gr .45 Colt bullets and roll crimp them like intended.

Yep!

You are asking about .45 ACP 230 grain auto-pistol bullets.

They are not intended for use in a .45 Colt revolver.

1. They are under-size .451" pistol bullets. .45 Colt uses .452" jacketed bullets.
2. Hornady doesn't make a .452" 230 grain revolver bullet.
3. There is no crimp cannelure on a pistol bullet for the roll crimp your .45 Colt seating die is designed to do on a revolver bullet that has a cannelure.

You can probably use them.
But you got the wrong bullets for a .45 Colt revolver.

I shot some 230 FMJ's in a 45 LC, just to blow the lead out. As I recall, all rounds went bang and hit the target. Which would have been a 12" gong at 25 yards. The 45LC operates better with 250 grain bullets, but there is no reason you can't use 230's.

One thou undersized aside, HP data will be fine. You load for the bullet weight and jacketed or cast. Bullet construction doesn't matter. And in the case of .45 Colt and a few other cartridges, the firearm. Ruger's, Freedom Arms and Thompson Centres are far stronger than say an SAA.

230gr FMJ/JHP is workable in the .45 Colt, I ran some 230gr Precision Delta FMJ over 9.5gr of Unique, I think loaded to around 1.600" and my 454 Toklat SRH shot this 4 shot group offhand at about 15yds

That's good enough for me.

1. Manufacturers use the same barrel dimensions for ACP vs. Colt barrels. It makes more manufacturing sense.

Where you get some differences are between manufacturers. If you're going for maximum accuracy, you need to try the different sized bullets to see what your gun prefers. For example, I have some 9mm handguns that prefer a .355" bullet, while others shoot better with a .356" bullet.

3. You can always use a taper crimp die for those bullets.

A few years ago I tried shooting a variety of bullets through my Ruger Blackhawk Convertible, using both .45 ACP and .45 Colt cases. I tried to load them so they were shooting at around the same velocities for both cases. In my gun, the 230 gr. RN bullets performed worst, both from ACP and Colt cases. I think that was more a comment on the quality of the bullet, rather than on the weight/style.

I wouldn't have a problem using starting JHP loads and working up from there.

Hornady 4th Ed. lists some .451" 230 gr. FMJ bullets. They might not be a current stock item, but apparently they did make them at one time.

That manual lists for that particular bullet:
7.5 to 8.5 gr. Unique
None of the other powders you list are included for that weight. Also the Ruger/TC-only loads start at 250 gr. bullets.

From the Hodgdon #26 manual for 230 gr. RN in .45LC:
12.0 to 13.5 gr. HS-6
5.5 to 6.5 gr. 700-X (they list 800-X for the 240gr. bullets and up)
7.5 to 8.5 gr. Unique

Use at your own discretion, Work up loads safely, etc.
