I am currently loading 9mm Hornady 124gr. HP/XTP with Hogdon HS-6. I am unable to locate any reload info relative to COL or powder weight. I have all the major books for source, but am still unable to find the necessary info. Much of the data does not match the bullet weight or type. Thanks for any info.

This is one grain diff. As long as you are not shooting max loads this is close enough. HS-6 seems to make this scoot right along.
Start somewhere near the middle and work up, if you choose.
Unless you are shooting max loads bullet type is not a major issue. Someone will probably tell you otherwise but this has worked for me for lots of years.
Shot 15 yrs in IPSC and none of the loads I shot were in a reloading book.
Be careful and enjoy you're reloading.

Dang! That's what happens when you type slow.

Try a factory load that shoots well in your firearm(s) for OAL.

When I start a new caliber, I try to copy a factory load and work around it.

kinser11,
I just put a factory Hornady 9mm XTP cartridge into my calipers. OAL measured 1.068.

Hope this helps. I would recommend you make sure it feeds well in your gun before you shot this. I claim no responsibility of your usage of this information. Use it at your own risk.

happy reloading.

dave from mesa,
The data you provided is for a lead bullet but kinser11 is using a Jacketed bullet. You should never use lead data for a Jacketed bullet or the other way either. Jacketed bullets and lead bullets rarely use the same data, it's not safe to interchange them. In this case most of the data is close but that's not always true. In this case the trouble is the starting charge is too low and might cause the slide not to cycle fully. At the most you might get a squib and a bullet lodged in the barrel is never a good thing.

It's true the 1gr in bullet weight doesn't matter but you should use the data for a Jacketed bullet, not the lead bullet data. This is the data from the Hodgdon site that can be used:
125 GR. SIE FMJ HS-6 .355" 1.090"
6.4gr 1131 fps 25,600 CUP
6.8gr 1169 fps 27,100 CUP

kinser11,
As you can see the COL = 1.090" when using a .355" Jacketed bullet. Start with the 6.4gr charge and work you way up to the higher charge and see what charge gives you the most accurate rounds.

If you find you don't like the results you get with HS-6 give Longshot a try. My son likes the rounds produced using Longshot better than ones produces with W231, HS-6 or Power Pistol.

Good luck... Be safe!!

same round

I called the Hornady company and spoke with Todd. He said to use 5.1 min - 5.9 max of HS-6 with a COAL of 1.060 with the 9MM 124gr XTP HP. Its a 800 number try it yourself.

You must not have the Hornady #6 manual then!

Page 729:
They list for the 124 XTP-HP:
HS-6 powder
5.1 starting, 5.9 Max
With an OAL of 1.060".

I wonder why the Hornady data and the Hodgdon data has such a big difference in charge weights. I know bullet seating depth will effect pressures but a difference of only 0.030" doesn't seem like enough a difference to drop the powder charge from 6.8gr to 5.9gr.

We aren't talking about a slight powder charge difference, we're talking about almost a full grain. There's almost a 15% change in the charge from both sources for a similar bullet of the same design and weight. That's a lot.... Remember, the difference isn't for the Min to Max charge, it's a .9gr difference between the 2 Max charges and the difference between the starting charges is 1.3gr.

.030 difference in OAL with different bullets and possibly different primers and probably different guns or pressure barrels used. If the OP has a chronograph he could give the velocities he gets using his bullets and powder (9mm Hornady 124gr. HP/XTP with Hodgdon HS-6) and see who is in the ball park.
