I accidentally wound up with a box of Buffalo Bore 255 grain standard pressure SWCs, usually I shoot +P JHPs, do any of yall use the standard pressure SWCs and how do they work for hunting say deer or hogs. I am using a .45 Blackhawk Bisley, 7 1/2" barrel.

From Buffalo Bore's website:

Standard Pressure Heavy .45 Colt - 255gr. Gas checked soft cast bullet (1000 fps M.E.566 ft. lbs.)

Any 255gr .45 slug at 1,000fps will handle your hunting chores with ease. I have shot deer with my cast 265gr hollowpoint bullet at ~1050fps, and it puts them down with authority.

RCBS 255 KT over a good load of 2400 is my load of choice. Accurate in both my Blackhawk and gives me another 150 fps from my 10" Contender.

Elmer Keith used .44 and .45 cal SWC to take just about everything in North America. You want penetration for game, especially large game. A 255 gr SWC at that speed has been proven to kill Deer and Hogs with ethical shots. IMHO shoot 30 rounds to understand the POA. Save 20 for hunting.

S&W model 25 in .45 Colt. 255 gr lead SWC over a charge of Unique giving about 900 fps. One of the SWC's hit a whitetail doe at 50 yards just behind the shoulder quartering to me a bit. Exit hole was just behind the last rib on the exit. Very dead deer after about 25 yds and a good blood trail.

Yeah, that type of load have been efficiently killing game for over 100 years. Put it where it should go and go fetch your supper.

Enjoy.\

One of the purposes that the 45LC was intended for was taking down horses. Not just "friendly" horse, and not just up close. If the original weak black powder loads could easily take down a human or a horse, deer should be nbd. I have never shot a hog, so I won't start lyin about that. ;-)

First time I have ever heard of the original ballistics referred to as weak! Those ballistics are still plenty enough for most of North America and elsewhere!

Inside of pistol range, I doubt you'll recover any bullets. 255 grains at 1000 fps would probably make it clear through 2 deer or 2 hogs, inside of 40-50 yards.
