I realize most here don't appreciate the judge. I love mine, I have the stainless long barrel.
question. everyone assumes that the 410 shell will be used. what is the story on the 45 colt shell? I am a Lurker cause really can not add any intelligent advice, but I do enjoy the for
 
By and large users report -- and my limited shooting of the Judge brings it out -- Judges are not particularly accurate with .45 Colt.

In addition to that, if you're only going to shoot .45 Colt, why not get a revolver designed for .45 Colt, like the S&W Model 25-series? What do you need all that extra cylinder for?
 
I am not looking to buy another gun.and as I mentioned I am very happy with my judge. let me ask this question in a different way. Is the 45 colt a decent bullet. the cowboys used it for a long time.
 
One thing I had trouble with in my .45/.410 TC Contender barrel was shooting lead bullets in the thing. All that freebore had gasses coming around the bullet before it reached the bore. Leading was TERRIBLE, so the only load I shoot in it is a hot 300 grain Hornady XTP load using 2400. I don't shoot it much, in fact, haven't fired a .45 Colt in it in a long time. It's not all that accurate due to the freebore and I have a very accurate Ruger Blackhawk in the caliber. The .410 barrel is just kind of fun. I bought it thinkin' it would be useful, but it was not that much. Small game needs to be inside 20 yards with it. I could hit a deer at 50 yards with it, is about 8MOA accurate with that load, but the Ruger is 4 MOA accurate with that load and I have a .30-30 barrel scoped for the TC which is 1.5 MOA accurate. :D

I think the post above answers your question.

The .45 Colt, in a revolver properly set up for it, is a great cartridge. It cannot perform to full potential in the Judge.
 
Not only cowboys used it.

The .45 Colt was first a U.S. military cartridge.
Back when they shot horses.

If I were buying a DA revolver to shoot .45 Colt ammo it wouldn't be a Judge. Those revolvers are way too big and bulky for that IMO. I would rather buy a S&W M625 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt.
 
.45 Colt will, in custom guns, shoot 2-3" @ 100 yards. Don't think the judge will do that.
 
thanks for the information. the judge is a universal handgun, kinda like a universal muffler clamp, not perfect for any application. I use mine for cotton mouths out of the water,and big cuders walking between ponds. was using 12ga. defender but pistol is easily carried. there is always a better gun, faster car, better deal. etc.....
 
.45 Colt is a great cartridge. Lots of variety. I hand load everything from light 200 gr swc target loads to 340 gr rifle rounds for my 1892 Rossi. You should be able to find something that meets your needs. Commercial ammo seems to be a bit pricey for range shooting, so most folks are reloading.
